Waves Roll Past Gonzaga, Win 3-1

SPOKANE, Wash. - With a career-high 16 kills, Samantha Cash helped lift the #19-ranked Pepperdine women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Gonzaga. With the win, the Waves improve to 8-5 and a perfect 2-0 in West Coast Conference play. The Bulldogs fall to 6-7 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Set scores for the match were 22-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-18.
Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) earned her 16 put aways on a season-high .542 hitting percentage. Defensively, she paced Pepperdine with six blocks.
Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) also delivered a stellar performance, and nailed down 16 kills on 31 swings. She committed just one error to hit for a .484 clip.
As a team the Waves hit a solid .300, while limiting Gonzaga to .185.
With her 10th kills-digs double double of the season, Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) continued to play exceptional two-way volleyball for Pepperdine. She recorded 13 kills and 13 digs.
Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) led all players with 14 digs.
The Waves got off to a solid start in set one, but a late surge from the Bulldogs gave the home team the opening advantage following a 25-22 win.
Pepperdine shut down Gonzaga in the second set, hitting a blistering .484 on the attack. Hill was unstoppable, logging five kills on six attempts. Victoria Adelhelm (Ranch Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) followed suit and was 4-for-4 in the frame.
The Waves outdid themselves in the subsequent stanza, hitting .680. Hill recorded four kills on four errorless swings, while Cash tallied five put aways and four blocks.
It was Pepperdine's defense that catapulted them to victory in the fourth set. The Waves tallied 6.5 blocks to keep the Gonzaga offense in check. A Cash kill would put point #25 on the board, and clinch the win for the visiting team.
The Waves return to action on Thursday, Sept. 29, when they face Saint Mary's. First serve inside Firestone Fieldhouse is set for 7 p.m.
