#21 Waves Struggle Against #11 Hawaii, Lose 3-1

HONOLULU - The #21 Pepperdine women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (25-14, 25-23, 20-25, 25-17) loss to #11 Hawaii to open the two match series with the Rainbow Wahine.
Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian) led the Waves with 11 kills, eight digs and four blocks. Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) followed with 10 kills, four digs and four blocks.
On defense, both Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) and Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) tallied 12 digs.
The Waves (6-4) and the 'Bows (9-1) meet once again on Saturday night in the Stan Sheriff Center at 7 p.m. HT/10 p.m. PT. Christopher Wells will be calling all the action, and can be heard live on PepperdineSports.com.
Hawaii was firing on all cylinders in front of a boisterous home crowd of over 5,000. They hit .270 on the attack, while shutting down Pepperdine's offense with 18 total blocks. Three Hawaii players reached double digits in kill totals led by Kanani Danielson's 16.
Pepperdine finished the night with a .103 clip.
After a disastrous first set, the Waves were able to push the loss from their minds and start afresh in set two. The score remained close throughout, but Hawaii edged the Waves 25-23 to head into the locker room with a 2-0 lead.
Pepperdine came out strong in the third frame, and forced a fourth set after winning 25-20. The 'Bows answered with a dominating fourth set, and captured the "W" after taking set four 25-17.
Saturday night's match concludes the Waves' pre-conference schedule. The West Coast Conference opener brings Pepperdine to the Pacific Northwest for a match with Portland on Sept. 22 followed by a Sept. 24 contest at Gonzaga.
