Waves Fall to Hawaii, 3-1

HONOLULU - The #21 Pepperdine women's volleyball team got off to a strong start, but it wasn't enough as #11 Hawaii recorded a 3-1 win in front of a near-capacity crowd inside the Stan Sheriff Center on Saturday evening. The Waves conclude their pre-conference schedule with a 6-5 record, while the Rainbow Wahine improve to 10-1.
Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) nabbed her eighth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 15 digs. Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) added 10 digs and 27 assists, while Michaela Christiaansen (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge HS) led the match with 16 digs.
Jane Croson paced Hawaii with 23 put aways, and Kanani Danielson added 16. As a team, the Rainbow Wahine were extremely efficient on the attack and committed just 12 errors on 146 swings for 63 kills and a .349 hitting percentage.
Pepperdine opened the match hitting a blazing .410 in the first set to win the frame 25-21, but finished the evening with a .119 clip. Hawaii turned it up after the opening stanza, and won the next three sets by scores of 25-9, 25-14, 25-14.
Following the contest, fans were invited to stay as audience extras for a taping of the television show "Hawaii Five-0." The staged volleyball match included several former collegiate players, including Pepperdine setter Kealohilan Kea. The episode is scheduled to air October 17 on CBS.
The Waves are back in action on Sept. 22 when they travel to the Pacific Northwest for a 7 p.m. match with Portland. The weekend wraps on Sept. 24 with a 12 p.m. tangle at Gonzaga.
