Waves Complete Successful Summer Baseball Season

MALIBU, Calif. - With school starting next week at Pepperdine, baseball student-athletes are returning to campus after wrapping up successful summers at various collegiate summer leagues from Cape Cod to Hawai'i.
Pitcher Jon Moscot (Pacific Palisades,Calif./Cuesta College) and Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) helped the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the prestigious Cape Cod League to a 29-win regular season and a run to the Western Division semifinals, in which they saw their season end to Falmouth. Vincej saw action in 28 games, tallying 20 hits in 81 at-bats for a .247. He also scored 11 runs and had and six RBI. Moscot made appearances in eight games (seven starts) totaling 43.1 innings pitched. He finished with an ERA of 2.91 and led the squad with 46 strikeouts--16 more than the next closest pitcher.
Junior infielder Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine Prep) competed against Moscot and Vincej in the Cape, as he suited up for the Chatham Anglers. Sever saw action in all 44 games, hitting .270 with 19 RBI, 10 doubles and two home runs in 174 at-bats, the most of any player on the squad.
Sophomore pitcher Corey Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra Catholic HS) made nine appearances for the Alexandria (Minn.) Beetles of the Northwoods League, making eight starts. He threw 43.2 innings, finishing with 35 strikeouts and a 3.50 ERA. Miller showed great command, only allowing 15 walks.
In West Coast League action, Ricky Villarreal (Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg HS) and Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) had strong summers for the Cowlitz Black Bears. Villareal appeared in six games, had 7.2 IP, with eight strikeouts and a 1.17 ERA as he led the team with three saves. Maurer had six starts in nine appearances for 39.0 IP. He had a 3.92 ERA WITH 35 strikeouts, tied for second most on the squad. The team finished with a 28-26 record.
Pitchers Brian McIlhenny (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) and Jared Lee (Fresno, Calif./UNLV) played in the Land of the Midnight Sun for the Anchorage Bucs of the Alaska Baseball League. McIlhenny made 11 appearances in relief for a 2-1 record. The junior had an ERA of 2.18 with 18 strikeouts and only eight walks in 20.2 IP. For his efforts, McIlhenny was named an all-star in the inaugural Alaska Baseball League All-Star Game. Lee appeared in seven games, making one start against the San Diego Waves, which he won in a 1-0 pitcher's duel. Lee boasted an ERA of 1.56 in 17.1 innings pitched with 16 strikeouts to only three walks.
Trevor McDonald (Costa Mesa, Calif./Orange Coast College) had a strong summer for the Kamuela Paniolos of the Hawai'I Baseball League. He appeared in 28 games, hitting .278 in 108 at bats, with 30 runs scored and 17 RBI. He led the team with 13 doubles, finishing second in the league overall. McDonald even saw some action on the mound, with 2.0 innings pitched notching one strikeout.
Senior shortstop Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) suited up for the El Dorado (Kan.) Broncos of the Jayhawk League. In 58 at-bats, he had 19 hits, seven doubles and 12 RBI for a .328 average. He earned National Baseball Congress (NBC) All-Midwest Regional team honors after hitting .358 in a three game series the week of July 17. In that three-game stretch, Silverstein collected nine hits in 16-at bats, five of which were doubles.
Two Waves played their summer ball in New York, with redshirt sophomore Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) playing for the Oneonta Outlaws of the New York Collegiate Baseball League and his high school teammate, senior Ryan Van Amburg (Campbell, Calif./St. Francis HS) playing for the Albany Dutchmen of the Perfect Game League. Meyer saw action in 10 games, scoring seven runs and knocking in two RBI as the Outlaws won the NYCBL 2011 title. Van Amburg started in 26 of 29 games played, tallying 21 hits for 11 RBI in 92 at-bats.
Out in the Midwest Prospect League, Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa HS) and Brian Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) both turned in stellar seasons. Swanner, a Western Division All-Star selection, appeared in 14 games, pitched 17.0 innings, with 18 strikeouts to only five walks. He tallied nine saves to lead the team, and his 0.53 ERA was the second-lowest on the squad for players with more than 15.0 innings of work. Redshirt freshman outfielder Langlois had 94 at-bats in 25 games played. He totaled 10 RBI with eight doubles and one home run while hitting .266.
Incoming freshman Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) had an impressive summer for the Glendale Angelenos of the California Collegiate League. Brown started in 37 of the 39 games he appeared in, earning 142 at-bats. He showed excellent pop with 10 home runs, one triple, 10 doubles and 28 RBI. He also led the team with 23 stolen bases.
