MALIBU, Calif. - From Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Anchorage, Alaska, Pepperdine pitchers have performed exceedingly well over the last month for their respective summer teams. Listed below is a short summary of each individual's accomplishments plus some other news and notes related to the Pepperdine baseball program.
Jon Moscot (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) was named to the 2011 Jewish Sports Review College Baseball D-I All-America Team. In his first season at Pepperdine, Moscot posted a 2-2 win-loss record with a 4.27 ERA and 48 strikeouts, five of which were recorded during his complete game shutout victory over Gonzaga on May 21.
Additional highlights for Moscot included a 10K game in his Pepperdine debut vs. Eastern Kentucky (2/20) and an eight strikeout, 8.1 inning performance against No. 23 Coastal Carolina (3/18).
Moscot is spending in summer pitching in the Cape Cod League for the first-place Hyannis Harbor Hawks (16-7). He leads his club with 21Ks and owns a 3.38 ERA through 18.2 innings of work.
Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) enjoyed a tremendous first half playing for the Danville (Ill.) Dans of the Prospect League, culminating in his being named to the West Division All-Star Team. Swanner leads the league with eight saves (10 relief appearances), while recording 14Ks to three walks and a microscopic 0.66 ERA.
Corey Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra Catholic HS) has looked sharp as a starter for the Alexandria (Minn.) Beetles of the Northwoods League, punching out 23 batters (five walks) through four starts and 22.0 IP. In a recent start vs. Duluth on June 29, the sophomore struck out 10 in 5.0 innings of work but received no offense as the Beetles lost 1-0.
Ricky Villarreal (Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg HS) and Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) have both been pitching well for the Cowlitz (Wash.) Black Bears of the West Coast League. Villarreal has converted three saves through five appearances, while Maurer has struck out 16. On June 28 vs. Bend (Ore.), Maurer pitched 6.0 scoreless innings with a season-best 7Ks.
Further north in the Alaska Baseball League, Jared Lee (Fresno, Calif./Fresno West HS) and Brian McIlhenny (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Preparatory) are anchoring the Anchorage Bucs relief corps. The pair of Pepperdine juniors has combined for 16 appearances and 34.2 innings pitched, during which they've combined for three wins, three combined shutouts and 32Ks. Their numbers across the board are nearly identical, except for the fact that McIlhenny's ERA is nearly a run lower than Lee's, 0.52 to 1.56.
Paying way out west in the Hawai'i Collegiate Baseball League is Trevor McDonald (Costa Mesa, Calif./Estancia HS/Orange Coast College), who was assigned to the Kamuela Paniolos. Despite playing in 12 of their 18 games, McDonald still leads the Paniolos in RBI with 13 and doubles with eight, while stealing five bases in as many attempts.
Brian Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) reported to the Rockies' Class A short-season club (Tri-City Dust Devils) in Pasco, Wash., after being selected by Colorado in the 14th round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Humphries thus far has scored 14 runs in 16 games and has five extra-base hits to go along with nine RBI and two stolen bases. Tri-City begins the weekend with an 11-10 record and is 2.0 games behind East Division front runner Boise (Cubs).
