MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine junior outfielder Brian Humphries Tuesday was selected by the Colorado Rockies during the 14th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft. Humphries, who was also a 19th-round pick by the Boston Red Sox as a high school senior in 2008, is the 125th Wave drafted since Major League Baseball instituted the amateur draft in 1965.
A three-time All-WCC honoree, Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) finished 2011 with a .288 batting average, three home runs, 28 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 12 attempts. His 11 thefts ranked him among the top five base stealers in the West Coast Conference and raised his career total to 24.
Additionally, half of Humphries' RBI came with two outs and his average in clutch situations (with runners on base, in scoring position, with two outs) was continually above .300. He also led Pepperdine with 16 multi-hit games, seven multi-RBI games, and tied Trent Diedrich for the team's longest hit streak of the year at 11 games.
Humphries was equally adept with his glove in splitting time between left and center fields. He finished the year with two outfield assists, which included throwing runners out at home plate and second base, and also displayed great range in getting to balls hit toward the gaps and down the lines.
Humphries is the fourth Wave drafted by the Rockies and the first since 2002 when Duke Sardinha and Rock Mills went in the 19th and 25th rounds, respectively. He is also the first Pepperdine position player since Nate Simon went to the Florida Marlins in 2009.
The draft enters its final day Wednesday with rounds 31 to 50.
