MALIBU, Calif. - After beating #4-ranked Duke on Friday, the #13 Pepperdine men's tennis team lost a closely contested match to #14 California on Sunday. Despite the 4-3 loss, the Waves tallied two singles wins over ranked opponents.
In doubles, the Golden Bears (8-3) claimed the win on court two, before Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany) and Jenson Turner answered with an 8-4 win versus Ben and Riki McLachlan. The victory improves the pair's record to 14-2 overall and a perfect 10-0 in duals.
Down 4-7 on court one, the Waves broke serve and held with Hugh Clarke (Brisbane, Australia) at the line to bring the score to 6-7, but Cal was not to be broken again and won the match 8-6 to clinch the doubles point.
This is only the second time this season the Waves (11-3) were unable to secure the point in doubles.
Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico) evened the score with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Nick Andrews, before Cal regained the lead with a win in the No. 5 match.
Bozhidar Katsarov defeated David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia) in straight sets to give the Bears the 3-1 lead.
After winning the first set 7-3 in the tiebreaker versus #68 Carlos Cueto, Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand) tallied the second team point for Pepperdine with a 6-3 victory in set two.
All eyes turned to Fanselow's match on court one with #34 Pedro Zerbini. After winning the first frame, 6-1, Fanselow dropped a 6-3 second set. Down 5-3, the sophomore held serve and threatened to break Zerbini's. After falling behind 40-15 Fanselow scored back-to-back points to tie the game at deuce. Zerbini gained the advantage, and Fanselow's next serve return missed clearing the net by inches to give the Golden Bear's top singles player the 6-4 third-set win.
The point scored by Zerbini was the dual clincher for California, who also beat Duke yesterday by a score of 4-3 at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Alfredo Moreno (Queretaro, Mexico) and #93 Chris Konigsfeldt's match was the last to finish and saw Moreno win the three set battle, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
Pepperdine returns to the court tomorrow, for a 1 p.m. match versus #27 Louisville.
