After setting a season high for points in a 77-61 win over San Francisco on Thursday, the Waves (7-6) were unable to keep it going against the highly touted Gaels (13-2, 2-0) and were held to their second-lowest point total of the season.
Freshman guard Jordan Baker (Tempe, Ariz./Tempe HS) tied his season high with 14 points to lead the Waves. Senior forward Taylor Darby (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills HS) contributed 10 points. Senior center Corbin Moore (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) had six points and a game-high nine rebounds.
The Gaels outshot the Waves 45.0% to 37.0% and had advantages of 40-29 on the boards and 12-7 on turnovers (leading to edges of 13-2 in second-chance points and 18-4 in points off turnovers).
The three-point arc played a major role, as Saint Mary's hit 10 of 23, while Pepperdine missed all 10 of its attempts. The last time the Waves failed to make a three-pointer was on March 2, 1996, against Santa Clara (a streak of 471 games).
Saint Mary's never trailed in the game after scoring the first five points. The Gaels went up by double-digits less than six minutes in and held a 35-18 lead at halftime.
The Gaels got 16 points from Matthew Dellavedova and 14 apiece from Jorden Page and Stephen Holt.
The Waves fell to 0-6 all-time when playing on New Year's Eve.
