BOISE, Idaho - The Pepperdine women's basketball team fell to Boise State 68-57 on Sunday afternoon at the Broncos' Taco Bell Arena. Despite the Waves surging out to a 9-0 lead, the Broncos came back to tie the game 11-11 with 12 minutes left in the second half and never looked back, taking a 10 point lead into halftime. The Waves would force 22 turnovers in the game and make a last-second effort to push for the win, cutting the Broncos' lead to six with 1:19 left, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
The Waves were led by Jazmine Jackson (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral HS) with 20 points and seven rebounds. Fellow senior guard Lauren Bell (San Bruno, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral HS) also scored in double figures with 13 points.
In the first half, the Waves started off with hot shooting courtesy of Boise native Jade McNorton (Boise, Idaho/Centennial HS) with a jumper, a three-pointer by Bell, a jumper by Jackson and a layup by Skye Barnett (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola HS). However, the Broncos would come surging back tying the game at 11 with 12:37 left in the half, thanks in large part to three three-pointers by Kati Isham.
The Waves took the lead back momentarily at the 9:56 mark with another jumper by Jackson, but the Broncos would reclaim it with 9:17 left. Through the following four minutes, the Waves would hold tight, keeping the deficit in check around three points, but the Broncos would start to build their lead with 4:56, and by the half, it was at double digits, 33-23.
At the half, the Waves were making the most of their forced turnovers, tallying 11 points off of them compared with the Broncos' four. However, the Boise State bench had 11 points and seven second-chance points. The Broncos shot a hot 52 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc, while the Waves shot 28.1 percent and 16.7 percent from three-point land.
In the second half, the Waves were playing catch up, as the Broncos pushed their lead to 16 with 18:52 left. The Waves would cut the lead back to 10 by the 14:25 mark with two offensive scores by Jackson and one by Robie Mayberry (San Leandro, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd HS). The Broncos would quickly push their lead back up, seeing their biggest lead of the game at the 12:36 mark, 48-31 and keeping it around 15 for the next nine minutes, until the Waves made a last minute effort, cutting the lead back to nine, 60-51 with 2:08 left. A three-point play by Barnett at the 1:34 mark put the score at 61-54. After adding a free throw from Jackson to put the score at 61-55 with 1:19 left, the Waves were unable to come any closer, as the Broncos put the game out of reach in the last minute with free throws, putting the final score at 68-57.
With the loss the Waves fall to 1-3 on the season and the Broncos advance to 3-1.
The Waves will return to Malibu to prepare for a trip over Thanksgiving break, as they will participate in the New Mexico Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M. A Friday (Nov. 25) game against Idaho at 4 p.m. PT is set, and the outcome of that game will determine the opponent on Nov. 26.
