Waves Struggle in Main Draw, Redeemed in Consolation

TULSA, Okla. - The Pepperdine men's and women's tennis teams had a rough outing on the opening day of the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships. The Waves lost all five first-round matches before Sebastian Fanselow, Finn Tearney, and Mousheg Hovhannisyan were able to end the day on a high note with wins in consolation play.
Despite being ranked #10 in the Campbell/ITA collegiate singles rankings, Fanselow (Essen, Germany/Kaplan Prep) had to play another top-10 ranked player in Jose Hernandez of North Carolina during the first round. Hernandez, seeded eighth, won the opening frame before Fanselow answered with a 6-3 win in the second. The third set was decided by a single break, as the Tar Heel advanced following a 6-4 triumph.
Fanselow rebounded with a 6-2, 6-2 win over #33-ranked Peter Kobelt of Ohio State in consolation action.
Hovhannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif./Continental HS) tallied three wins in the qualifying draw to gain entrance to the main event, but fell in the first round today to Oklahoma's Peerakit Siributwong, 6-3, 6-1.
The junior returned to the court for an upset win over UCLA's Clay Thompson, 6-3, 6-4. Thompson is listed at #35 in the singles rankings, while Hovhannisyan is ranked #111.
Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College) dropped a three-set battle to Damian Hume, but ended the day with 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Ben McLachlan.
In the doubles main draw, the #11-ranked pair of Fanselow and Jenson Turner (Woodland Hills, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) suffered a disappointing 8-6 loss to Corrado Degl' Incerti' Tocci and Luka Somen of Virginia Tech.
The duo will begin action in the consolation bracket tomorrow.
In Pacific Palisades, Calif. at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/World Study Centre) and Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) lost to Ekaterina Morozova and Dylan Windom of Kansas. The pair looks to get back on track this Saturday in the consolation round.
