MALIBU, Calif. -- An early barrage of three-pointers by Saint Mary's put the Pepperdine men's basketball team in a hole, and the Gaels went on to an 85-60 victory in West Coast Conference play on Saturday.
Four Waves (7-12, 1-1 WCC) scored in double-figures, led by junior forward Taylor Darby (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills HS), who had team highs of 16 points and nine rebounds.
The Gaels (14-2, 2-0 WCC) won their eighth straight game as they made seven of their first eight three-point attempts and hit 15 of them for the game.
By the time the Gaels' Matthew Dellavedova had his fourth three-pointer of the first half (and the Gaels' seventh), it was already 28-14 in Saint Mary's favor nine minutes into the contest.
The Gaels would go on to take a 46-27 lead at halftime. An 8-0 run by Pepperdine, with four points by Darby, near the start of the second half would cut the deficit to 13 at 52-39. But Saint Mary's quickly pulled away and went up by as many as 33 points at 79-46.
Junior guard Lorne Jackson (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley HS) followed up two of the best games of his career with 15 points and three assists. Junior center Corbin Moore (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) came up one point shy of his career high with 11 points while adding five rebounds. Senior forward Jonathan Dupre' (Houston, Texas/Marshall HS/Collin County CC) contributed 10 points.
Mickey McConnell directed the Gaels' successful attack as he handed out a career-high 15 assists to go with 11 points. Five Gaels scored in double-figures, led by Dellavedova's 17 points.
The Gaels outshot the Waves, 49.3% to 33.9%, and committed just five turnovers.
The Waves have played the last three games without junior guard Keion Bell (Los Angeles, Calif./Pasadena HS), the WCC's top scorer at 20.7 points per game, who has been out with an ankle injury.
The Waves next make their only road trip of the month of January up to the Pacific Northwest, where they'll take on Gonzaga (Thursday, Jan. 13, 6 p.m.) and Portland (Saturday, Jan. 15, 7 p.m.).
