NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Sophomore forward Anisa Guajardo gave the Pepperdine women's soccer team a second-half lead, but two late scores by Cal State Northridge resulted in a 2-1 loss for the visiting Waves on Friday night.

Guajardo (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan HS) scored for the third time in four games, breaking a scoreless tie in the 66th minute. The ball got loose from CSUN's goalkeeper and Guajardo netted it from a difficult angle.

It almost went 2-0 in the Waves' favor a little bit later when junior forward Michelle Spacciapolli (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic/Boston College) got past the defense. With the CSUN goalkeeper coming off her line, Spacciapolli took a shot that looked on target, but instead hit the crossbar and bounced away.

CSUN's Farryn Townley tied it in the 73rd minute and a Pepperdine own goal in the 88th minute gave the Matadors (2-2-0) the victory.

"If (Spacciapolli's shot) goes in, game over," Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said. "But then they scored a good goal and it's 1-1. They had a lot of energy late and their fans were really into it, but we were still doing a good job. It was very, very difficult to see the own goal happen. It was cruel, unlucky, unfortunate, whatever you want to call it."

Pepperdine (2-2-0) had a season-high 19 shots to CSUN's 14 and had a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Matadors earned their first win against the Waves in 10 matches.

"Tonight was our best game in terms of organization, passing and movement," Ward said. "It was a great game. But now we have to come back with a good response on Sunday."

On Sunday (Sept. 5), the Waves return to Tari Frahm Rokus Field and host Detroit at 1 p.m.
