MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine baseball's annual fall fundraiser - the Patrick Rooney Memorial Golf Tournament - will take place Monday, Nov. 15 at the Moorpark Country Club in Moorpark, Calif.
Check-in time for the foursome scramble is 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start slated for 10 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team as well as those who win the `Closest To The Pin' and `Longest Drive' contests following a dinner buffet served at 4 p.m.
The entry fee is $195 per player with tee sponsorships available for $200. Sponsors are eligible to receive a 100 percent tax deduction from their fees, less cost of benefits, and Pepperdine will gift receipt $95 as a tax deduction from each individual entry.
A silent auction also will take place throughout the day. This year's items include sports memorabilia, golf amenities, baseball merchandise, sportswear and dinners for two.
All dollars raised support the ongoing development of the Pepperdine baseball team and its facilities. The Waves have made significant upgrades to Eddy D. Field Stadium the past six years, earning their facility rave reviews as "the most beautiful stadium in the country." The team installed a new padded outfield wall in the fall of 2009, which has brought a more professional feel to the complex.
One of the program's specific future goals is to play overseas on a foreign tour. Head coach Steve Rodriguez is currently looking into the possibility of playing in Australia or Japan and believes that such a trip would be an amazing experience for the team, not only for baseball, but also culturally.
The Patrick Rooney Memorial Golf Tournament is named in honor of the former Waves' third baseman, who died alongside his father, Bill, in a tragic plane crash during the winter of 2010. Rooney played at Pepperdine from 2002 to 2005 and helped lead the Waves to a pair of West Coast Conference titles and three NCAA Regional berths. Patrick continued to support the program following graduation by participating in the team's annual golf tournaments.
Patrick's younger brother, Colin, later played third base at Pepperdine from 2009-10.
