Pepperdine and USC Box Score (March 23, 2010) 
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Pepperdine baseball lost 3-2 to USC on a cool Tuesday night at Dedeaux Field. The win improved the Trojans' record to 11-10 while the Waves fell to 6-13.
USC first lit the scoreboard with an unearned run in the fourth. Matt Foat led off the inning with an infield single and then moved to second on an error by the first baseman before scoring on Matt Hart's ground ball to third.
Two throwing errors by Pepperdine starter Aaron Gates (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran) led to a pair of unearned runs in the fifth. Adam Landecker smacked a leadoff double and came around to score on Gates' first miscue - a wild throw trying to catch a hustling Joe DePinto following his sacrifice bunt.
Gates had DePinto picked off second base later that frame but his throw was wide of the bag, allowing the Trojan junior to make it a 3-0 game. Gates responded by striking out the side and finished the game with a season-high seven punch outs.
Sophomore Brian Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) made it a 3-1 game in the eighth on his first home run of the year - a solo shot to right field off USC reliever Chris Mezger. Two outs later, junior Torrey Jacoby (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Preparatory) cut the USC lead to one with a round-tripper to left.
For both Humphries and Jacoby, tonight's home runs were their first since last year's home series against Chicago State (3/20-3/22/10).
Junior Keven Inman (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces HS) followed Gates to the mound and pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief with one walk and one strikeout.
Pepperdine returns to action this weekend for a three-game home series against Stony Brook (N.Y.) University. Games begin at 3 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
