Pepperdine and Stony Brook Box Score (March 27, 2010)
MALIBU, Calif. - Junior Matt Bywater (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) struck out eight and delivered his second complete game shutout victory of the season Saturday as Pepperdine held on for a 3-0 win over Stony Brook at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Bywater's 100-pitch effort snapped both a personal three-game losing streak and six-game losing skid for the Waves who improved to 7-14. Stony Brook's record dropped to 7-9.
"Stony Brook is a real aggressive team and I needed to throw strikes, but nothing too good for them to hit if I wanted to have any success," Bywater said. "They put the ball in play a lot, but it kept going right to our guys."
Bywater kept the ball low and cruised through the Stony Brook lineup until there were two outs in the ninth inning. But with runners on second and third, Bywater got cleanup hitter Robert Dyer to hit a soft chopper to shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) who recorded the game's final out with a clean throw to first base.
Vincej, who was making his first start of the season, made three putouts on defense to go with five assists.
Bywater started the game by striking out the side in the first and then faced the minimum 18 batters up through the seventh. He allowed two baserunners during this stretch but caught Trevor Jankowski stealing in the third, and induced a 3-6-3 double play ball off Dyer in the fourth.
Bywater's defense spun another double play behind him in the eighth with two on and one out, raising his GIDP season total to eight.
Senior Colin Rooney (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) paced the Waves' offense with two doubles and scored the game's first run in the second on junior Harrison Kain's (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) RBI single up the middle.
Pepperdine started an unlikely two-out rally in the seventh, in which both SBU starter Nick Tropeano and reliever Michael Barbot combined to walk five consecutive Waves, netting two insurance runs. Junior pinch hitter Torrey Jacoby (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Preparatory) and sophomore catcher Nate Johnson (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) were credited with RBI on their free passes.
All three runs were charged to Tropeano, who walked six and struck out five over 6.2 innings.
Pepperdine and Stony Brook conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. Senior Robert Dickmann (Woodland Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) is slated to start for the Waves as they look to win their second home series of the month.
