Pepperdine and Cal State Fullerton Box Score (Feb.20, 2010)
FULLERTON, Calif. - Junior Matt Bywater pitched the first complete game shutout of his career in Pepperdine's 6-0 win over No. 4 Cal State Fullerton before 1,904 fans Saturday night at Goodwin Field.
The victory improved the Waves' early season record to 1-1 while the Titans dropped to 0-2.
Bywater (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) had pitched as many as eight innings on three previous occasions in his career, but never before had he gone the distance until Saturday night. His effort was capitalized by 10 strikeouts, two shy of his career high of 12 established last March against Washington State.
With a lineup stacked with All-America talent, the Titans threatened several times to break Bywater's shutout bid but came up empty with runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth innings.
Nick Ramirez led off the seventh with a double and advanced to third on a fielding error by right fielder Aaron Gates (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) only to be left stranded 90 feet away following a pair of controversial calls that raised the ire of Fullerton head coach Dave Serrano.
Titan right fielder Walker Moore was called out on batter's interference for the second out after the umpires ruled that he obstructed catcher Nate Johnson's (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) throw to second base, and then left fielder Joey Siddons was called out on a bang-bang play at first base. Serrano ran out of the dugout to argue the call and was ejected from the game.
Fullerton leadoff man Gary Brown reached third base with one out in the eighth following a two-base wild pitch, but Bywater came back to strike out Corey Jones for the second time and got Christian Colon to ground out to second base.
Earlier in the game, the Titans put runners aboard in the second and fourth frames only to see two double plays derail their efforts. Fullerton left six runners left on base.
Pepperdine's offense came to life with a big four-run second inning off Fullerton Freshman All-American Noe Ramirez. Senior Colin Rooney (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) and Gates led off the inning with back-to-back singles, then designated hitter Torrey Jacoby (Camarillo, Calif./Notre Dame (Ariz.) Preparatory) and left fielder Ryan Van Amburg (Campbell, Calif./St. Francis) drove them in on consecutive run-scoring doubles.
Shortstop Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) delivered the fourth and final run of the inning on a RBI single and finished the night 3-for-4.
Ramirez was chased from the game after six innings of work, giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out nine.
The Waves collected a pair of insurance runs off the Titans' bullpen in the eighth. Rooney and Gates again led off with base hits and came around to score via wild pitch and Jacoby's RBI ground out to first.
Pepperdine completes its first weekend of competition Sunday at 1 p.m. vs. Oregon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Ducks are 2-0 following wins over Fullerton and Long Beach.
