MALIBU, Calif. - Sophomore Tyler Brubaker blasted a two-run home run, and freshman Joe Sever boosted his season average to .545 with a three-hit game, but their efforts weren't enough in Pepperdine's 12-4 loss to Cal Poly Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

Today's decision evened both team's records on the young season to 2-2. Brubaker's (Valencia, Calif./Saugus HS) home run was the Waves first of the season and his first since March of 2009 against Washington State.

Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) entered the game with five consecutive hits but grounded out in his first at-bat prior to reaching base four times via three singles and a walk.

Junior Torrey Jacoby (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Preparatory), sophomore Nate Johnson (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) and newcomers Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis) and Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) all doubled for the Waves but the home team couldn't string enough hits together to catch a Cal Poly squad that jumped out to leads of 7-0 and 9-1 by the sixth inning.

On the mound, a young Waves pitching staff toughed it out against an experienced Mustang team that returned 18 letterwinners and seven starters from its 2009 NCAA Regional club. Freshman Alex Najera (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon HS), in making his first career start, struck out a game-high five batters in addition to three runs on four hits.

Three other freshmen headed to the mound in relief, with all of them experiencing similar results. Cal Poly left fielder Bobby Crocker caused most of the frustration on the Pepperdine bench, going 3-for-5 with a home run and six RBI, and Mustang leadoff man Mitch Haniger scored four runs.

Pepperdine returns to the diamond this weekend for a three-game series against regional rival Cal State Northridge. The Waves clash with the Matadors on the road Friday and Sunday, but will play Saturday's contest within the friendly confines of Eddy D. Field Stadium. Game times are 2 p.m. Friday, and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
