Pepperdine and Brown Box Score (March 5, 2010)
BATON ROUGE, La. - Pepperdine lost to Brown 8-7 Friday afternoon as part of a three-team, six-game tournament taking place at LSU's Alex Box Stadium this weekend. The Bears rallied from a 6-0 deficit to win their season opener while the Waves dropped to 3-6.
Brown will play again later tonight against the host and second-ranked Tigers. Pepperdine, however, will have to wait until Saturday to seek retribution against both clubs; LSU beat the Waves 8-1 Thursday night.
Pepperdine scored once in the top of the second on sophomore Brian Humphries' (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) RBI groundout, and then added to its lead with a three-run fifth and two-run sixth.
The Waves started the fifth with back-to-back singles from freshman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) and senior Colin Rooney (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS). A wild pitch plated Sever, Rooney came home following three walks and senior Ryan Heroy (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) scored on a ground ball to shortstop.
Pepperdine made it a 6-0 game in the sixth on Rooney's RBI double to center field and scored its final run in the seventh on Brown's fourth wild pitch of the afternoon.
Junior Keven Inman (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces HS) pitched five scoreless innings in his first collegiate start, but the Bears were able to chase him from the game following two singles, a walk and a sacrifice fly to start the sixth.
Then, with one out and runners at the corners, Pepperdine brought in freshman Jordan Luvisi (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Preparatory) to pitch to Daniel Rosoff but the Brown left fielder crushed a three-run home run to trim the Waves lead to 6-4.
The Bears again put up a four spot in the eighth inning off two Pepperdine relievers. Brown scored the tying run on a hit by pitch and the game-winning run on an Aaron Gates' (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) wild pitch.
Freshman Cory Jones (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley HS) started the eighth and was saddled with the loss in his first collegiate appearance. Kevin Carlow won the game out of middle relief and Matt Kimball earned the save after getting Humphries to ground into a game-ending double play with runners at the corners.
Humphries, Rooney and Sever each led the Waves with two hits.
Pepperdine's Saturday doubleheader begins against Brown at 12 p.m. PT/2 p.m. CT. The Waves will face the hometown Tigers at 5 p.m.PT/7 p.m. CT.
