Pepperdine and Saint Mary's Box Score (May 8, 2010)b>
MORAGA, Calif. - Redshirt sophomore Cole Cook (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter) pitched his first shutout of the season and the offense pounded out 16 hits in leading Pepperdine to a 12-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
The win improved Pepperdine's overall record to 16-24 and 5-6 vs. the West Coast Conference, while the Gaels dropped to 15-24 and 6-8. The Waves will pass Saint Mary's for fourth place in the WCC with a win on Sunday.
Cook's complete game effort was his fourth of the season as well as the Waves' second of the weekend, third of the week and 11th of the season. Pepperdine's 11 complete games are its most since 2001 when major leaguer's Dan Haren and Noah Lowry anchored the rotation.
Cook finished the game on 109 pitches, 70 of which were called strikes. He also struck out six batters and walked two, while scattering seven hits.
No Gael advanced past second base, plus one was thrown out stealing and another was doubled off first base by senior Ryan Heroy (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) after snaring a ball in foul territory.
The Waves, however, had no trouble circling the bases as they jumped out to leads of 2-0 and 3-0 before blowing up for nine runs over the final two innings.
Freshman second baseman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) led the club with four hits and sophomore Ryan Van Amburg (Campbell, Calif./St. Francis HS) drove in four runs on two base knocks, including a two-run double in the ninth.
Heroy finished the contest without a hit but helped change the game's complexion after reaching on the second baseman's error to begin the eighth. Sever singled two batters later and then junior Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate) loaded the bases after the Gaels' shortstop couldn't handle his infield single.
Freshman Zachary Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) capitalized on the prior miscues by delivering a two-run, two-out single to left, and Van Amburg made it a 7-0 game with a base hit to center.
All four of Pepperdine's ninth-inning runs also came with two outs. Sophomore Tyler Brubaker (Valencia, Calif./Saugus HS) drove in Sever and Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) on a pinch hit, and after Brian Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) singled to right, Van Amburg cleared the bases with a two-bagger to center.
Pepperdine will look to complete its second straight sweep of Saint Mary's Sunday at 1 p.m. Senior Robert Dickmann (Woodland Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) will start for the Waves against Martin Agosta.
