Pepperdine and Cal State Northridge Game 2 Box Score (April 6, 2010)
MALIBU, Calif. - Six shutout innings from fifth-year senior
Robert Dickmann (Woodland Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) and a five-RBI game from senior
Colin Rooney (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) were the key performances in Pepperdine's doubleheader sweep of Cal State Northridge Tuesday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves edged the Matadors, 3-2, in game one, and jumped out to a 6-0 first-inning lead in game two en route to a 12-7 triumph.
The victories lifted Pepperdine's record heading into West Coast Conference play this weekend to 10-15, while Northridge - losers of five in a row - dropped to 16-12. The two regional rivals split their four-game season series at two games apiece.
Dickmann improved to 5-2 on the year after tying a career high with eight strikeouts in the Waves' game one win. Dickmann last struck out eight batters on March 9, 2008 vs. Columbia, and was just as effective today by allowing just five baserunners.
His five wins are one shy of his career season high of six, which he recorded during his first year as a Wave in 2007.
Northridge had its opportunities to score on Dickmann, but left eight runners on base including three at third.
Dickmann escaped a second-inning jam with a strikeout and groundout, and in the fourth struck out two of the final three batters he faced after the first two reached via single and walk.
Back-to-back singles in the fifth placed CSUN runners on the corners but Dickmann got Andrew Muren to pop up for the final out. He retired the side in the sixth before turning the game over to junior reliever Keven Inman (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces HS) who let the Matadors back in the game with single runs in the seventh and eighth.
Northridge made it a 3-1 game after C.J. Belanger scored on TS Reed's ground ball, and cut its deficit to one when Justin DeMarco drove in Ryan Pineda from third on a grounder to short.
Regular Friday starter and redshirt sophomore Cole Cook (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) earned his first save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning in which he struck out the side on 24 pitches. Cook's save was the second for Pepperdine this season and his first since Feb. 27, 2009 at UC Davis.
Pepperdine's offense netted two runs in the third and another in the fifth off reliever Shawn Wilyman, who pitched the final seven innings, after weekend starter Ryan Juarez pitched a scoreless first.
Junior Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate HS) broke a 0-0 tie in the third with his two-run single in the third, and in the fifth, sophomore Brian Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) scored what would be the eventual game-winning run on sophomore Nate Johnson's (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) single to center.
Humphries finished game one 2-for-3 and recorded his first stolen base of the year.
In game two, Pepperdine knocked CSUN starter Paul Tremlin out of the first inning after scoring six two-out runs on five hits and a walk. Given cracked the scoreboard first scoring on Johnson's RBI double, freshman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) followed with a run-scoring single, and then the Waves' No. 7 and 8 batters Rooney and sophomore Ryan Van Amburg (Campbell, Calif./St. Francis HS) came through with a pair of two-run blasts.
Rooney drove a shot to the right-center gap that plated Johnson and Sever, and Van Amburg capped the inning's fireworks with a home run to left, which was his first since March of 2009 vs. Cal Poly.
Rooney singled two more times in the third and eighth innings to drive in three more runs and finished with a career high five RBI. He is the first Wave to post a five-RBI game since Nate Simon did it against Loyola Marymount in April of 2009.
Van Amburg finished with three RBI after doubling in Rooney for a run in the fifth and was one of six Waves to record a multi-hit game.
Pepperdine's offensive showing allowed sophomore and game two starter Aaron Gates (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran) to snap a personal and career-worst four-game losing streak. Gates, who had been on the losing side of four consecutive one-run decisions, didn't have his best outing today but ate up six innings and struck out two.
The Matadors scored three times off Gates in the third, which cut Pepperdine's lead in half at 6-3, and tacked on another run in the fifth that made it an 8-4 game. Gates didn't allow a hit until the third inning, but struggled somewhat with his control as he matched his career high with five walks. He did, however, induce two double play ground balls that killed Northridge rallies in the fourth and fifth.
Freshman reliever Cory Jones (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley HS) finished the game for Pepperdine with four strikeouts through three innings. CSUN scored once off him in the seventh and twice in the ninth, but never got closer than within five runs of the Waves.
Pepperdine embarks on its longest road trip of 2010 beginning this weekend - eight games in 12 days - with a three-game series at WCC rival Santa Clara. From there, the Waves will play at UC Santa Barbara (April 13), Gonzaga (April 16-18) and Cal State Fullerton (April 20).
The Orange and Blue won't return home until the final weekend of April, when it plays host to Portland (23-25).
