Men's Tennis Posts 7-0 Wins Over LMU, SDSU

MALIBU, Calif. - The #23 Pepperdine men's tennis team won 17 of 18 matches played on Thursday and earned 7-0 sweeps of both Loyola Marymount and San Diego State in a doubleheader at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.

The victory over the Lions in the morning gave Pepperdine a point toward the PCH Challenge, a newly created season-long competition between the two local rivals. The Waves now lead the overall competition 9.5 to 7.5.

Against the Lions, the Waves won all three doubles matches, then won five singles matches in straight sets. Playing at #1 singles for the first time this season, freshman Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany) fought back from a set down to win in three sets to complete the sweep.

The 7-0 afternoon sweep of the Aztecs required a nice comeback in doubles. Although the Waves suffered their only loss of the day at the #1 position, sophomore Hugh Clarke (Brisbane, Australia) and freshman Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand) came back from a 4-1 deficit to win 9-7 at #2, and Fanselow and junior Alejandro Moreno (Queretaro, Mexico) rallied to win the #3 slot via a tiebreaker.

It was all Pepperdine in singles play against SDSU. All six of the Waves won in straight sets, and five of the six lost four games or fewer.

"I thought today was the best we've played all year," Pepperdine Coach Adam Steinberg said. "I like how we are progressing. I think the guys did a great job in doubles. That is what got us going today. It feels good to finally be back over .500."

Pepperdine (10-9) next visits #9 UCLA on Wednesday (April 7) before playing the final three regular-season matches of the year at home.
