Rooney Homers as Waves Capture Series at Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. - Pepperdine scored nine runs between the fourth and sixth innings to erase an early 3-0 deficit and provide senior starter Robert Dickmann (Woodland Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) all the run support he'd require in the Waves' 10-5 series finale victory over Gonzaga Sunday at Washington Trust Field.

Dickmann tied his season high win total from 2007 by improving to 6-2 on the season. His club, meanwhile, raised its overall record to 13-18 and West Coast Conference mark to 3-2.

The defending conference champion Bulldogs dropped to 13-22 overall following the loss and are 2-3 against league opponents. Pepperdine's series victory over Gonzaga was its first in Spokane since 2006.

Dickmann didn't have the easiest of outings en route to team-leading sixth win. He allowed all five runs on three walks and seven hits, including two home runs; however, he also consumed seven innings of work complete with six strikeouts.

But after tossing a season-high 117 pitches, Dickmann turned the game over to junior reliever Keven Inman (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces HS) who delivered two scoreless innings and one strikeout in finishing his fifth game this year.

The Waves have hit the ball well behind Dickmann all season (9.9 run support average) and it was no different again today as the lineup combined for 19 hits and lifted the team's batting average to .272 - 28 points up from where it was at the start of the month.

Since the calendar rolled over to April and conference season began the offense has been nothing short of impressive. The team is hitting .342 through eight games (5-3) to go along with 57 runs scored and 24 extra base hits.

Leading this surge has been fifth-year senior first baseman Ryan Heroy (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) who today raised his April batting average to .500 (.288 overall) and extended his season-long hitting streak to a seventh game after going 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

Also hitting well this month has been senior third baseman Colin Rooney (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) who cranked out his first home run since last year and was one of four players on the afternoon to produce three hits.

Junior Harrison Kain (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) was one of those aforementioned players as he finished the game three runs scored and two RBI. Kain's RBI triple in the fourth off Gonzaga starter Liam Barron plated sophomore Ryan Van Amburg (Campbell, Calif./St. Francis HS) for Pepperdine's first score, and his run off freshman Zachary Vincej's (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) single cut the Bulldogs' lead to 3-2.

Rooney's leadoff round-tripper in the fifth against reliever Mark Phillips knotted the game at 3-3. Then three batters, two hits and another reliever later, sophomore catcher Nate Johnson gave Pepperdine the lead for good on a two-run double to center field, which scored Heroy and Kain.

Johnson, who has driven in nine of his team-leading 25 RBI this month, came home on freshman second baseman Joe Sever's (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) two bagger down the left-field line and the rout was on.

Pepperdine tripled its lead to 9-3 thanks to a three-run sixth, in which the Waves chased the Bulldogs' third reliever from the game. Rooney and Heroy led off the frame with back-to-back hits, Kain reached on run-scoring fielder's choice, while Vincej and junior Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate HS) drove in the remaining two runs with consecutive singles.

Vincej delivered his third RBI in the eighth with a double to left field, making it a 10-5 game, and presenting the Waves with their fourth double-digit run total of the month.

In three games against the Bulldogs, the Waves scored 24 runs on 48 hits, which included eight doubles and two home runs.

Pepperdine returns to action Tuesday, April 20 for a 6 p.m. contest against Cal State Fullerton, concluding its eight-game, 12-day road trip. The Waves defeated the Titans earlier this year 6-0 behind junior Matt Bywater's (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) first career complete game shutout.
