SPOKANE, Wash. - In a 180-degree turn of events from Friday's 16-3 loss, Pepperdine's hitting and pitching was on target throughout Saturday's 11-2 win over Gonzaga at Washington Trust Field.

Redshirt sophomore and starter Cole Cook (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) scattered seven hits and struck out six in delivering his second complete game of the year, and his offense provided him leads of 4-0 and 8-0 before tacking on three more insurance runs at the very end.

Incredibly, seven of the nine Pepperdine starters ripped two or more hits as did substitute designated hitter and junior Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate HS), who finished the day 2-for-3 with an RBI. Freshman shortstop Zachary Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) led the Blue and Orange with three hits, which included a double, and sophomore catcher Nate Johnson (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) drove in a team-high three RBI to give him 23 on the season.

The victory snapped the Waves' three-game losing streak and lifted their record to 12-18 and 2-2 within the West Coast Conference, while the Bulldogs dropped to 13-21 and 2-2. The two schools wrap their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. If the Waves can win the rubber match, it will mark their first series victory against Gonzaga since 2006.

Pepperdine's offensive fireworks began in the first inning off Gonzaga starter Andrew Danner, who gave up eight of the 11 runs on 12 hits. With one out, redshirt sophomore left fielder Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) and senior third baseman Colin Rooney (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) ripped consecutive singles before executing the Waves' first double steal of 2010.

Fifth-year senior and first baseman Ryan Heroy (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) capitalized on the situation with an RBI single and Rooney made it a 2-0 after scoring on a fielding error by the shortstop. Junior center fielder Harrison Kain (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) followed with a double down the right-field line to produce the Waves' third run, and Johnson plated sophomore Ryan Van Amburg (Campbell, Calif./St. Francis HS) on a RBI ground ball to first base.

Pepperdine produced its second four-run inning four frames later as Heroy's one-out double to left center served as the first of six consecutive hits, which were one shy of the team's season record of seven. Van Amburg, Kain, Johnson, Vincej and Given all followed Heroy onto the base paths with five straight singles, and in between, Van Amburg and Kain pulled off Pepperdine's second double steal of the ball game.

The Waves finished with a season best five stolen bases. Vincej stole the first of his career in the fourth inning.

Danner was pulled from the game after surrendering Given's single and was replaced by Jeremey Stumetz, who the Waves' reached for one run in the eighth. They later scored two runs on three hits in the ninth off Jacob Hiatt.

Van Amburg singled home Rooney in the eighth for his lone RBI of the game. Johnson and Vincej scored in the ninth on balls put in play by Silverstein and Rooney.

On the mound, Cook was the model of efficiency as he averaged slightly more than three pitches per batter and finished with 106. He only issued one walk and held the Bulldogs to just one hit through the first four innings.

Gonzaga reached Cook for two runs in the fifth on three hits. The key shot was a two-out, two-run double by Kyle Hawk that brought home Cameron Edman and Andy Hunter.

Cook settled down after that and allowed just three more hits over the final four frames. Two of those hits came in the eighth, but with one out and a runner on third, Cook got Clayton Eslick to ground into a 6-4-3 double play.

Both of Cook's victories this season have been complete games. He pitched the first of his career last month in a 5-3 win over then-No. 13 East Carolina, and last week pitched all 8.0 innings of a 3-0 loss at Santa Clara.
