Pepperdine and Gonzaga Box Score (April 16, 2010) 
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga snapped junior Matt Bywater's (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) 18-inning scoreless streak in the first before scoring six more times against him between the third and fourth innings during the Bulldogs' 16-3 win over Pepperdine Friday night at Washington Trust Field.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Bywater and dropped Pepperdine's record to 11-18 and 1-2 against the West Coast Conference. The win improved Gonzaga's season marks to 13-20 and 2-1.
After junior Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate HS) tied the game at 1-1 on a two-out single, the Bulldogs responded with three runs on four hits in their half of the third and again in the fourth. All three of Gonzaga's fourth-inning runs, however, were unearned since they were scored with two outs and after Bywater committed a throwing error.
Pepperdine climbed back into the game at 7-3 in the sixth thanks to a two-run shot off the bat of sophomore Nate Johnson (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS), but freshman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) was later thrown out at home on a fielder's choice following his second triple of the year. Then, with one out and runners at first and second, Gonzaga starter Cody Martin struck out the inning's final two batters to escape the jam.
The Bulldogs pulled away for good with four runs off freshman reliever Cory Jones (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley HS) in their half of the sixth, and pounded the bullpen once more in the eighth with five runs on four hits. Gonzaga finished the game with 21 hits, while Pepperdine collected 12.
Four Waves recorded two-hit games, including Johnson, Given and Sever. Johnson leads Pepperdine with five home runs and 20 RBI.
The Waves and Bulldogs continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. Redshirt sophomore Cole Cook (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) will take the hill for the Waves in search of his first conference victory of the year.
