SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Pepperdine scored six fourth-inning runs to rally back from an early four-run deficit, but its bullpen could not keep the UC Santa Barbara offense at bay in a 15-10 loss Tuesday afternoon at Ceasar Uyesaka Stadium.

The victory improved the Gauchos' record to 15-12, while the Waves dropped to 11-17. Pepperdine returns to West Coast Conference play this weekend for a three-game series at Gonzaga.

In what was the highest scoring game Pepperdine's been involved in this season, both clubs combined for 30 hits, 25 runs, seven doubles, three stolen bases, two triples and 23 men left on base.

Fourteen of those hits were collected by the Waves, who also had three of their players drive in two or more runs. Sophomore Ryan Van Amburg (Campbell, Calif./St. Francis HS) and fifth-year senior Ryan Heroy (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) paced the offense, combing for six hits and five RBI.

Additionally, Pepperdine's No. 1 - 3 batters each scored two runs as did its No. 8 batter freshman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory).

Pepperdine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to errors made by the Gauchos' second and first basemen. Leadoff batter and sophomore Brian Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) began the game with a routine ground ball to second that was mishandled by UCSB's Sean Williams and senior Colin Rooney (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) reached two batters later when Trevor Whyte let a high chopper slip through his mitt.

The miscues kept the inning alive for Heroy and Van Amburg, who both drove in runs without hitting the ball out of the infield. Heroy reached on a fielder's choice on what could have been an inning-ending double play, and Van Amburg hit a slow roller to the left side that was knocked down by shortstop Matt Valaika.

UCSB quickly tied the game in their half of the first. After Williams lined a shot of starter Robert Dickmann's (Woodland Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) leg and into shallow left field, Valaika followed with a triple to the gap in right center and then scored on Ryan Tregoning's sacrifice fly to left.

In the bottom of the third with freshman reliever Cory Jones (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley HS) on the hill, the Gauchos broke open the game a first time by scoring four runs on three hits and a two-out error by the second baseman Sever.

Tregoning singled home the go-ahead run on a ground out that made it a 3-2 game, but Jones had difficulty getting that elusive third out as Shane Arslan and Bryce Tafelski supplied back-to-back run scoring hits and then Whyte reached on Sever's bobble. The Gaucho's No. 9 hitter Brett Fick drove in the fourth run on a single to center before junior Keven Inman (Bakersfield, Calif./Saugus HS) was brought in to record the final out.

Trailing 6-2, the Waves made a tremendous comeback in the fourth that gave them back their two-run lead at 8-6. The inning started innocently enough as UCSB starter Nick Loredo walked sophomore catcher Nate Johnson (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS), but then Sever got a hit, and then Humphries drove them both in on a single over the third baseman's head.

Redshirt sophomore and designated hitter Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) extended the inning with a walk that was followed by three consecutive run-scoring hits by junior Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate HS), Rooney and Heroy. Van Amburg added the final run of their outburst with a sacrifice fly to center.

And that's about as good as it would get for the Waves. Because after the fourth, the UCSB bullpen held them to just two more runs while its offense clubbed four more Pepperdine relievers for nine runs on nine hits over the last five innings.

Freshman Alex Najera was saddled with the loss to drop his record to 0-2. David Meals was credited with the win (2-4) despite being knocked around for six hits and two run over 2.2 innings pitched.
