SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara scored two first inning runs off Pepperdine starter Cole Cook (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades HS) and that's all the Broncos would need en route to a 3-0 win over the Waves Saturday night at Schott Stadium.

Senior Alex Rivers pitched a complete-game shutout for Santa Clara, scattering three hits on 104 pitches with nine strikeouts. Cook countered with eight innings pitched and five punchouts.

Pepperdine dropped to 11-16 (0-1 WCC) with the loss, snapping a season-long three-game winning streak, while Santa Clara improved to 14-15 (1-4 WCC).

After quickly retiring the first two batters he faced, Cook walked Tommy Medica and then proceeded to give up three consecutive singles to the left side by Geoff Klein, Curtis Wagner and Ryan Rieger.

Cook allowed just four baserunners between the second and seventh frames, but was tagged for three more hits in the eighth as the Broncos added an insurance run. Cook finished the game with 124 pitches thrown.

Pepperdine had a chance to have its own big first inning; however, redshirt sophomore Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) was thrown out at third base for the second out, and after walking the bases full, Rivers rebounded with a strikeout of sophomore Aaron Gates (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS).

Only four more Waves reached base the rest of the night, including sophomore Brian Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) who finished with a team-high two hits. Senior Ryan Heroy (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) collected Pepperdine's final base knock with a two-out single in the seventh.

Pepperdine and Santa Clara conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. with senior Robert Dickmann (Woodland Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) taking the hill for the Waves vs. Bronco Chris Mendoza.
