MALIBU, Calif. - The #27 Pepperdine men's tennis team's commanding victories in doubles helped lead to 6-1 victories over both #30 Denver and #61 UC Santa Barbara in a doubleheader at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Waves won all six doubles matches on the day, and only one of the six went beyond the score of 8-3. Pepperdine has now won six of its last seven matches to improve to 12-10 on the season.
"I liked our doubles play," Pepperdine Coach Adam Steinberg said. "We played with great energy. Our doubles play has improved so much. You can't beat top 10 teams at the NCAAs without winning the doubles point. We needed a change in doubles and the guys have done that. We're playing a lot better. It's the time of year when you need to be at your best, and I'm excited about how we're playing."
It was the fourth and fifth times this season that Pepperdine has swept all three doubles matches. After a rocky stretch, the Waves have won the doubles point in five straight matches, including one against #10 UCLA earlier this week.
Pepperdine ended Denver's school-record 10-match win streak to drop the Pioneers to 18-3 overall, while UC Santa Barbara is now 10-10.
Three Waves posted straight-set wins in singles in both matches: freshman Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany) at #2, sophomore Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico) at #4 and freshman Mousheg Hovhannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif.) at #5.
The Waves' only losses on the day both came at #6 singles as they rotated in a couple of players not usually in the lineup.
Pepperdine concludes the regular season at home on Thursday (Jan. 15) against Saint Mary's at 2 p.m. The WCC Championships will be held April 23-25 in San Diego.
