MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's tennis team swept all six singles matches to defeat Rice, 6-1, on Wednesday.
Pepperdine, ranked #27 in the nation, improved its record to 5-5 as Rice, #31 in the country, fell to 6-5.
After Rice won two of three matches in doubles play to take the first point of the match, Pepperdine rebounded and won all six singles matches, including 12 of 13 sets.
"It was a very good win for us," Pepperdine Coach Adam Steinberg said. "Rice is a very good team. We have got to get better in doubles but I thought we did really well, 1 through 6, in singles."
The Waves were led by senior Bassam Beidas (Cairo, Egypt) at #1 singles who sparked Pepperdine with his excellent play against a very strong opponent in Bruno Rosa, the nation's 25th ranked player. Tied 4-4 in the first set, Beidas broke Rosa's serve to take a 5-4 advantage. Beidas, ranked #90 in the country, wouldn't let up and won his match, 6-4, 6-2. His win gave the Waves a 2-1 lead in the match.
"Bassam played great," Steinberg said. "He came through against a great player."
Freshman Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany) got the momentum started with his 6-4, 6-2 win at #2 singles over Oscar Podlewski.
Freshman Mousheg Hovhannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif.) won an important tie-breaker (7-3) at #4 singles over Isamu Tachibana to take his match, 6-3, 7-6.
The Waves next host #33 Duke on Wednesday (March 10) at 2 p.m.
