Dickmann Goes The Distance In Waves 4-2 Win

MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine senior Robert Dickmann (Woodland Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) struck out a season-high seven batters in a 4-2 complete game victory over Stony Brook Sunday afternoon before 550 sun-splashed fans at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

Dickmann's nine-inning effort was his second of the season and second in as many days for the Waves who improved to 8-14 with the win. Stony Brook dropped to 7-10.

Pepperdine has posted five complete games this season, which are its most since 2003 when it recorded six. The Waves are still a long way off from topping the program season record of 26, which was originally established in 1975 and matched in 1986.

The Seawolves put runners on base every inning against Dickmann but couldn't scratch out more than a single run in the third and seventh innings. Stony Brook's Stephen Marino drove in both runs, plating the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly in the third and then driving in William Carmona with a two-out double in the seventh.

Marino represented the game-tying run when he came to the plate again in the ninth, but Dickmann forced him to ground out to second following a short pep talk from head coach Steve Rodriguez and his four infielders.

A pair of Stony Brook errors helped Pepperdine score two of its four runs. The Waves made it a 1-0 game in the third on freshman Joe Sever's (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) RBI single, which followed consecutive two-out errors by the SBU shortstop and catcher.

Freshman Zachary Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) started the rally with an infield single and moved into scoring position for Sever after catcher Justin Echevarria threw the ball past his first baseman trying to pick off sophomore Brian Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS), who reached on the shortstop's fielding error.

Pepperdine later broke the 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth. Senior Ryan Heroy (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) drove in the first two runs with an single to center, and then two wild throws by Echevarria and the right fielder on Nate Johnson's (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) sacrifice bunt attempt allowed Heroy to score all the way from first.

All but two Waves recorded a base hit Sunday with Vincej leading the club with a pair of singles.

Stony Brook starter Adam Brown suffered the loss, giving up all four runs on seven hits and two walks through six innings of work. Reliever Chris Maier finished the game with two scoreless innings.

Pepperdine returns to action Tuesday night for a 6 p.m. game at Jackie Robinson Stadium against the undefeated (20-0) UCLA Bruins. The Waves won last year's game there, 5-4.
