#5 USC Defeats #15 Waves in Men's Tennis

MALIBU, Calif. - Freshman Sebastian Fanselow defeated a nationally ranked opponent at #4 singles, but the #15 Pepperdine men's tennis team lost at home to #5 USC, 6-1, on Friday.

"We played an amazing team today," Pepperdine Coach Adam Steinberg said. "USC has been #1 for a reason, and they showed that today. We have no excuses, we just need to regroup and try to get better. We've got a great group of guys, and I know they can bounce back."

Pepperdine, which is now 3-3, has lost this season to USC, UCLA and Ohio State, all of which are currently ranked in the top six nationally.

USC won the doubles point by claiming the first two matches, but Pepperdine gained consolation when sophomore Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico) and freshman Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand) won at #2 doubles in a tiebreaker.

The Trojans (9-1) clinched the contest as they won the first four singles matches in straight sets. Fanselow (Essen, Germany) gave the Waves a point at #4 singles when he beat #83 Daniel Nguyen in a third-set super tiebreaker.

The Waves next host Fresno State on Tuesday (Feb. 23) at 1 p.m.
