Men's Basketball Trip Ends With Loss at Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- A challenging two-game road trip by the Pepperdine men's basketball team came to an end as the Waves lost at Miami (Fla.), 94-59, on Thursday night.
Pepperdine (5-11) fell at Alabama on Tuesday night before venturing further east to play the Hurricanes, who are unbeaten at home (11-3 overall, 7-0 in the BankUnited Center).
Senior forward Mychel Thompson (Portland, Ore./Santa Margarita Catholic HS/Stoneridge Prep) scored 15 points and junior guard Keion Bell (Los Angeles, Calif./Pasadena HS) added 12, but the Waves shot just 30.9% from the field.
The Hurricanes made 12 of 25 three-pointers (48.0%) and hit 53.8% of their shots overall.
Miami never trailed in the game. The Hurricanes had a 14-point lead at 27-13 though the Waves later trimmed the deficit to six at 29-23 thanks to a 10-2 run that included six points by Bell and two baskets by junior forward Taylor Darby (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills HS).
But Miami immediately went on an 14-0 run and took a 43-25 lead at halftime. The Hurricanes began the second half on a 12-1 run to push the lead to 55-26 and would take their largest leads at 82-42 and 89-49.
Malcolm Grant led the Hurricanes with 22 points and eight assists while Reggie Johnson had 12 points and 15 rebounds.
