MALIBU, Calif. -- The Pepperdine men's basketball team fell behind 12-0 and never caught up in a 70-64 loss to Cal Poly on Tuesday night.
Though senior forward Mychel Thompson (Portland, Ore./Santa Margarita Catholic HS/Stoneridge Prep) scored a team-high 24 points, the Waves dropped to 5-9 overall while the Mustangs improved to 4-7.
Cal Poly held Pepperdine scoreless for more than seven minutes until senior forward Jonathan Dupre' (Houston, Texas/Marshall HS/Collin County CC) made a jumper on the block at the 12:58 mark. That got the Waves' offense going, as they cut the deficit to three at 14-11 with 8:51 left after two free throws by junior center Corbin Moore (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) and to two at 21-19 with 3:44 left after a lay-up by Moore.
But Cal Poly went into halftime with a 32-26 lead, and behind the strength of David Hanson's career-high 28 points, 18 of which came in the second half, the Mustangs never gave up the lead.
Pepperdine closed within three points on four occasions during the second half. Only once did the Waves ever attempt a game-tying shot, and that came at 46-43 with 10 minutes remaining. It was just a four-point game at 54-50 after junior guard Lorne Jackson (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley HS) made two free throws with 6:44 to play, but Cal Poly scored the next seven points.
Cal Poly's Shawn Lewis went 9-for-10 from the foul line in the final 1:11 to help Cal Poly ice the victory. He hit 15 of 19 free throws at the line en route to 19 points.
Junior guard Keion Bell (Los Angeles, Calif./Pasadena HS) added 11 points for the Waves and Dupre' had a solid contest with nine points and a team-best seven rebounds.
Pepperdine shot 39.3% as a team compared to 45.8% for Cal Poly.
The Waves now have a couple of days off for Christmas and next week they will take a two-game road trip to face Alabama (Tuesday, Dec. 28, 8 p.m. CT/6 p.m. PT) and Miami (Thursday, Dec. 30, 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT).
