WAVE POINTS
SERIES-LY SPEAKING: Pepperdine leads its all-time series with Fresno State, 7-5, which dates back to Jan. 5, 1978 when the two clubs clashed at the Chico State Classic ... The Waves are 3-0 vs. the Bulldogs at neutral sites ... 3-2 at Firestone Fieldhouse ... 1-3 in Fresno ... The Bulldogs have won four of the last five meetings in the series dating back to 1994 ... Fresno State won the previous meeting, 69-58, in Malibu on Dec. 30, 2006.
BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE: All 15 of Pepperdine women's basketball home games and select road contests will be broadcast live and for FREE over the world wide web at PepperdineSports.com via WaveCasts ... Click on the WaveCasts link on the front page to view a complete list of upcoming live events.
DID YOU KNOW?: Pepperdine guard Stephanie Turman — a Wave from 1982-84 — set the program's single-game assist record of 18 vs. the Bulldogs during a 83-80 victory ... Two players have transferred to Pepperdine from Fresno State: Nikki Brodowy (1992-94) and Kelsey Kline (1991-93).
FEELING BULLISH: Fresno State, winners of three consecutive WAC championships, collected seven of nine first-place votes in the coaches' preseason poll and 14 of 18 in the media poll ... Senior guard Jaleesa Ross was selected as the preseason player of the year.
300 WINS AT FIRESTONE: Pepperdine's 73-69 win vs. Temple marked its 300th victory at Firestone Fieldhouse ... The women's hoops team's all-time record in Malibu stands at 300-168 (.641) ... Since the 1976-77 season, Pepperdine has posted 27 winning season at home and just six sub-.500 seasons ... The Waves have posted a double-digit win total 15 times, including seven consecutive from 1997-2003.
MAS TRES FOR THE WAVES: Pepperdine finished the Temple game with 12 3-pointers, which were its most since draining 13 during a Dec. 28, 2002 home game vs. Quinnipiac ... The club's single-game record of 14 was achieved vs. San Diego in January of 2004 ... Pepperdine shot 58.3 percent from 3-point range against the Toreros in that game, which was their highest percentage of the last decade.
DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTIES: A different player has led the Waves in scoring over the last five games with the last three reaching a game-high 18 points ... Junior guard Jazmine Jackson led Pepperdine with 19 points in the season's first two games vs. UC Santa Barbara and Nevada ... Freshman forward Robie Mayberry then shouldered the scoring load at Northridge with a team season best 24 points ... The Waves have been paced by junior guard Lauren Bell, redshirt junior guard Katie Menton and sophomore forward Kelsey Patrick over the last three games.
SWEET CHARITY: Behind a 15-of-16 effort (.938) from the free-throw line vs. Temple, Pepperdine is now shooting at a 73.9 clip on the season (82-111) ... Their opponents meanwhile have been struggling a bit, connecting on only 65.3 percent (81-124) of their shots from the charity stripe ... The Pepperdine record for the best single-season free throw percentage is 74 percent, which was established just three seasons ago in 2007-08 ... Waves Kelsey Patrick (.833), Jazmine Jackson (.826) and Lauren Bell (.833) are all shooting better than 82 percent from the line so far this season.
FOLLOW THE BOUNCING BALL: Fifteen offensive rebounds netted the Waves 13 second-chance points in their four-point win vs. Temple ... And while that total was far short of its season high of 23 (vs. Northridge and UC Davis), Pepperdine is still averaging 18.0 offensive rebounds per game ... If the Waves can keep up this pace, they'll break the team season record of 16.4 orpg set by the 1999-2000 club.
I GET BY WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS: Pepperdine's 21 assists vs. the Owls tied a season high from the game at Cal State Northridge and it was the 11th game since head coach Julie Rousseau took over that the Waves have registered 20-plus helpers in a single game ... Lauren Bell has led Pepperdine in assists through four games this season (26) and is averaging 4.3 per game; she dished out a season-high eight assists vs. Boise State and was credited with seven vs. Temple.
TREY COOL: Katie Menton tied a career best with six 3-pointers in the 82-65 win over Boise State ... Menton finished with 18 points, four shy of matching her personal record of 22 ... Four of Menton's long-range shots tickled the twine within the final two minutes of the first half and first two of the second half ... Menton's bomb with seven seconds remaining in the opening period gave Pepperdine a 14-point lead over the Broncos at 37-23 ... Then she hit two on back-to-back possessions as part of a 16-6 run that boosted the Pepperdine lead to 24.
MISSED IT BY THAT MUCH: Lauren Bell just missed achieving the first double-double of her career vs. Boise State, finishing the contest with nine points and a team season best eight assists ... She also led the team with four steals in 25 minutes on the court ... Of Bell's eight assists, three directly led to one of Katie Menton's six 3-pointers, while another two led to easy layups by Jazmine Jackson.
THE T'KEYAH TO SUCCESS IS REBOUNDING: Despite starting the game on the bench vs. Boise State, sophomore forward T'Keyah Shealy wound up leading all Waves with a personal best seven rebounds in 24 minutes of playing time ... She also scored a game high eight points on 3-7 shooting and made two free throws ... Of her seven boards, four were off the offensive glass as Pepperdine won the rebounding battle, 39-33.
PROTECT YOUR POCKETS: Pepperdine's seven steals vs. Temple gave the Waves 94 through six games on the young season — a WCC-leading average of 15.7 per game ... The current team season record for steals per game of 14.2 was set by the 1980-81 Waves.
HOT OFF THE BENCH: Pepperdine's bench has outscored its counterparts 161-97 ... The Waves' subs, led by Robie Mayberry (10.3 ppg), Kelsey Patrick (7.3 ppg/3.0 rpg) and sophomore guard Shay Cooney-Williams (6.3 ppg) among others, have averaged 30.8 points per game ... Pepperdine's deep bench also has averaged 19.8 rpg and stolen more than twice as many passes, 34-16.
AMONG THE WCC LEADERS: As a team Pepperdine is No. 1 entering this weekend's WCC games in steals (17.4), turnover margin (+9.2) and 3-point field goals made (8.0) ... Individually, Jazmine Jackson currently ranks No. 1 in the WCC in steals (4.0) and is third in defensive rebounds (5.8) ... Lauren Bell is No. 2 in steals (3.8), third in assist/turnover ratio (1.7) and tied for third in assists (3.8) ... Katie Menton is the conference leader with 2.6 3-point FG made.
COACH'S CORNER: Throughout the 2010-11 women's basketball season Pepperdine head coach Julie Rousseau and Director of Sports Productions Kira Elste will bring fans a closer look at the program with their new weekly interview show "Coach's Corner" ... Episodes are currently available to view via the All Access page (click on the video camera icon in the upper right corner) at PepperdineSports.com ... The show is taped Tuesday mornings at Pepperdine's Joslyn Plaza, which overlooks the remolded central campus and Pacific coastline.
TWO FOR 2011-12: Pepperdine will receive additional help at the forward and guard positions next season with the announced additions of National Letter-of-Intent signees Tessa Emerson and Ea Shoushtari ... Emerson, a 6-foot-2 a low-post player, is heading into her senior season at Santa Barbara High School ... Shoushtari is a 5-foot-10 combo guard for LACES (Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies).
IT'S RAINING THREES: Pepperdine launched 36 3-point field goal attempts — the most ever in the Julie Rousseau-era — during its 70-62 loss to UC Davis ... Unfortunately, the Waves only hit nine of their long-range jumpers (25 percent), including five by Robie Mayberry and two from Katie Menton ... Mayberry hit her first three 3-point attempts of the second half to bring Pepperdine back within one point after being down by nine at the break, but then the Waves went cold and missed their next 11 shots from beyond the arc ... Only twice previously in the past decade has Pepperdine taken as many as 30 trifectas: 30 at Santa Clara (2/14/08) and 30 vs. San Francisco (1/31/03).
BOARDING SCHOOL: Thirteen (six offensive, seven defensive) of Pepperdine's 47 rebounds vs. UC Davis were pulled down by Jazmine Jackson, who established a new career single-game high ... Jackson's effort on the boards marked her second 10+ rebound game of the season and sixth of her career ... Her previous career high of 10 was reached on five occasions ... Jackson also provided eight points, six assists and four steals.
ROUSSEAU-ERA RECORDS FALLING: The following team game records dating back to Julie Rousseau's first year as head coach (2004-05) have already been surpassed (or tied) through the first four games of 2010-11: Points (108 at CSUN); Field Goals Made (39 at CSUN); Field Goals Attempted (84 at CSUN); 3-Point Field Goals Attempted (36 vs. UC Davis) and Most Steals (23 at Nevada).
TURN OF THE CENTURY: The Waves' 108 points scored at Cal State Northridge were the most scored by the Waves since a 112-44 home win vs. Cal Baptist on Jan. 9, 1993 ... The last time Pepperdine hit 100 in a game was during a 101-60 victory at Firestone Fieldhouse vs. Quinnipiac on Dec. 28, 2002 ... Under Julie Rousseau, Pepperdine's highest point total was 96, which it scored vs. Northern Arizona in the 2009-10 season opener ... The last time the Waves scored more than 100 on the road was on Dec. 6, 2000 at Cal State Fullerton (W, 103-55) ... And only once previously have the Waves scored 108 points or more away from Malibu, and that occurred on March 8, 1979 vs. Chapman (W, 108-68) in the first round of the AIAW West Regional at Santa Barbara.
SHOOT THE BALL!: 108 points equaled a lot of field goals and field goal attempts, and the Waves' 84 attempts at CSUN were their most since putting up 80 shots vs. Portland (L, 83-84 OT) on Feb. 7, 2008 ... Their 39 field goals made were tied for the most from this past decade as they also hit 39 shots vs. the Matadors (W, 92-49) on Dec. 16, 2002.
WHERE ROBIE RANKS: With 24 points at CSUN, Robie Mayberry became only the eighth Wave over the past decade to score that many points in a single game, joining Miranda Ayim, Nicole Funn, Daphanie Kennedy, Jennifer Lacy, Shanell Law, Shandrika Lee and Jessica Ross ... Kennedy, who scored 24 points or more 13 times in her career, was also the last freshman to hit this plateau and she did so twice during the 2004-05 season, first vs. Portland on Jan. 13 (28 pts.) and then at Santa Clara on Jan. 22 (24 pts.) ... Lacy's 34 points vs. San Francisco on Feb. 3, 2005 are the most points scored by an individual during the Julie Rousseau era ... Fannie Allen holds the school's all-time single-game record with 46 points vs. Cal Poly (12/18/1980).
WHY DON'T WE STEAL AWAY?: Pepperdine's 20 steals in its 108-74 win at Cal State Northridge marked the fifth time since January of 2009 — and second time in one week — that the Waves committed in excess of 20 thefts (vs. San Diego, Northern Arizona, at Hawai'i, at Nevada) ... Their 23 steals at Nevada on Nov. 14 were the most by a Julie Rousseau-coached team ... Jazmine Jackson led all players with seven steals, setting a personal single-game career high and Lauren Bell came away with five ... Overall, Pepperdine forced 37 Wolfpack turnovers and held them to only 40 FG attempts in the 66-61 loss in Reno ... The program's single-game steals record of 35 was set vs. UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 1, 1987.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR DOUBLE J: Jazmine Jackson recorded the second double-double of her career in the season-opening 68-56 win over UC Santa Barbara, collecting 19 points and 10 rebounds ... This was Jackson's first double-double since her freshman year of 2008-09 when she posted 12 points and 10 boards at Cal State Bakersfield ... Jackson is the only player on the Waves' roster to have reached this milestone ... Her 10-rebound game vs. UCSB was the fifth of her collegiate career, tying a personal best ... Her 19 points marked the 34th time she scored in double figures.
SKYE'S THE LIMIT: Junior forward Skye Barnett reached a personal milestone vs. UCSB as well after pulling down a career high 12 rebounds ... Her previous single-game high of nine was recorded on three previous occasions vs. San Diego (1/15/09), at San Diego State (12/8/09) and at UCSB (12/20/09) ... Nine of her boards came on the defensive end of the court as she finished two points shy of her first career double-double ... She also led the club vs. the Gauchos with two blocks and assisted on two field goals.
NO OPENING-NIGHT JITTERS: Since game-by-game records started being kept prior to the 1976-77 campaign, Pepperdine owns a 21-14 record in season openers, including the 68-56 win over UC Santa Barbara ... The Waves have started their year vs. UC Santa Barbara twice previously, beating them 84-55 in Nov. of 1978 at the Cal Poly Tournament and 93-57 at home in Dec. of 1987 ... Pepperdine has won its last four-straight season openers after losing six in a row from 2001 to 2006 ... Including last Friday, Pepperdine has started 15 seasons at home, 12 on neutral courts and eight away from Firestone Fieldhouse ... The Waves are 11-4 in home season openers.
WAVES ENTER FIFTH DECADE OF WBKB: The 36th season of Pepperdine women's basketball officially began Nov. 12, 2010 when the Waves took to the court at Firestone Fieldhouse vs. regional rival UC Santa Barbara ... The past decade (2000-10) of women's hoops was especially good for coaches Mark Trakh and Julie Rousseau as they combined for a .556 winning percentage, four 20-win seasons, three WCC Tournament Championships and four NCAA Appearances ... Additionally, Tamara McDonald (2003) was named WCC Player of the Year ... NeSha Thomas (2001) and Kelsey Ball (2006) Earned WCC Defender of the Year honors and Damaris Hinojosa (2000) was tabbed WCC Freshman of the Year ... 29 players were recognized as All-WCC selections, another seven made the WCC All-Freshman Team and 12 received the distinction of being named WCC All-Academic.
THIS YEAR'S MODEL: Pepperdine returns four starters from last year's WNIT squad that posted a 20-12 record and finished as the conference runner up to Gonzaga at the Zappos.com WCC Basketball Championships ... The Waves' opening night lineup is expected to include returning guards Jazmine Jackson, Lauren Bell and Katie Menton, and forward Skye Barnett ... Alex Jarrell will likely move into the starting center position ... A veteran of 60 games, Jarrell accumulated 59 rebounds in 2009-10 and was the team's second-leading blocker with 13 ... Senior guard Joy Lelo leads a deep and experienced bench that features several others who played in more than 20 games a year ago, including WCC All-Freshman team selection Shay Cooney-Williams ... As a team, Pepperdine finished 2009-10 ranked 11th in the nation in turnover margin at 6.13 ... Individually, Miranda Ayim ranked 16th in blocked shots (2.6).
BE A PART OF IT!: After successfully increasing women's basketball attendance by 24% and season ticket sales by 11% across the league with the help of the NCAA Women's Basketball Grant last year, the Pepperdine University women's basketball team and the West Coast Conference look to improve exposure and attendance during the 2010-11 season with the WCC "Be A Part of It" campaign ... This conference-wide community service initiative encourages WCC fans to come to basketball games and support their favorite WCC basketball teams both on and off the court ... Over a series of four games determined by Pepperdine, fans will be invited to take part in various community service initiatives such as WBCA's Pink Zone and Soles4Souls.
STRIVING FOR GREATNESS THROUGH SERVICE: The women's basketball team is one of the most involved teams at Pepperdine in terms of community service ... In the summer, the team put on a series of basketball clinics for local youth to attend and later it worked at a Santa Monica convalescent home in early September during "Step Forward Day" ... This level of involvement, head coach Julie Rousseau believes, is the key to success in life and on the court - which is giving to others and making the world a better place.
A RAPPER NAMED JACKSON: The WCC women's basketball coaches tabbed Jazmine Jackson to the Preseason All-Conference Team ... A two-time All-WCC Honorable Mention, Jackson enjoyed a fine sophomore season in 2009-10 in which she collected over 100 boards on the defensive end and led Pepperdine in steals with the fifth-best average in the WCC at 1.9 per game ... Jackson also averaged 11.5 points per game and dished out a team-high 87 assists.
SUMMER CHAMPS: Jazmine Jackson and Lauren Bell won the 2010 San Francisco Bay Area Women's Pro Am Championship with their Mission Rec Center Team in early August after beating Golden State, 75-70, in game two of their best-of-three series ... Mission Rec rallied in the final minutes to win the title, holding a squad that featured five players from Stanford's 2010-11 roster scoreless over the final three minutes ... Mission Rec won the first game 77-61.
COACHES COME BACK: Previous Pepperdine women's basketball staffers Kristen Dowling and David Johnson returned to the Waves' bench this past summer ... Johnson, an assistant on Rousseau's first Pepperdine team in 2004-05, left an Aquinas (Calif.) High School boys' basketball team that won the previous three Christian League championships ... Dowling, who served as a graduate assistant from 2006 to 2008, returned to Malibu from Cal State Bakersfield where she was part of a coaching staff that guided the Roadrunners to the two best records in school history.
SPANNING THE GLOBE: Former Pepperdine three-time All-WCC first team selection Miranda Ayim was selected to Canada's Senior Women's National Team as an alternate this past summer and played throughout Europe in preparation for 2010 FIBA World Championship ... She is now playing for the Alanya team based in Turkey ... Elsewhere in Europe, Daphanie Kennedy — a Wave from 2005-08 — is currently playing for a team in Spain.
ABOUT PEPPERDINE: Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won a total of nine NCAA championships in five different men's sports - one of just 14 schools to have accomplished this feat. Of the 14, Pepperdine is the only non-BCS school and has by far the smallest enrollment. The majority of Pepperdine's teams are ranked nationally year after year and compete for conference and national titles.
