Waves Falter Against #19 San Diego

SAN DIEGO - Despite out-blocking San Diego, the Pepperdine women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-23) loss to the #19 Toreros today inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Waves drop to 14-7 overall, and 5-2 in the West Coast Conference. San Diego remains undefeated in league play and is now 17-4 overall.
Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) led Pepperdine with 14 digs. The junior libero now boasts 1,216 digs in her career to rank fourth in the Pepperdine record book. She needs just 31 more digs to overtake Kekai Crabbe for third place.
Although every available Wave attacker registered at least two kills, it was not enough to overcome the triple-threat of Ali Troost, Amy DeGroot and Chloe Ferrari, who all reached double-digit kill totals.
Defensively at the net, Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) paced Pepperdine with four blocks in addition to seven kills. Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) scored 10.5 points for the Waves with eight kills, three block assists, and a service ace.
The first frame saw USD jump to an 11-6 advantage, prompting head coach Nina Matthies to break up the momentum with a timeout. The Waves went on to score four of the next five points to force San Diego to spend a timeout of its own. With Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) at the service line, Pepperdine took its first lead of the set, but the Toreros answered with three-straight points to regain the lead. The Waves continued to battle, but San Diego ended claiming the first set, 25-22.
Emily Cook (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) tallied five kills on a .500 attack percentage to lead Pepperdine in the first game.
With momentum in their favor, the Toreros dictated the second frame from start to finish and headed into the locker room with a 2-0 lead after a 25-20 second-set victory.
Pepperdine went point-for-point with San Diego in the third set, thanks in part to impenetrable blocking from Frederick, Adelhelm, Hill and Brittney Clark (San Jose, Calif./Presentation HS). Tied at seven, USD went on a 7-2 run, but the Waves stayed aggressive and were able to tie the match one again, 22-all. The Toreros turned to Ferrari to close out the frame, who hit two kills in the final three points to clinch the match.
Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) came of the bench for the Wave with five kills and no errors for a .556 clip.
With the weekend complete, the Waves have finished the first half of WCC action. They open the second half next week with home matches versus Santa Clara on Thurs., Oct. 28 and San Francisco on Sat., Oct. 30. Pepperdine defeated both squads earlier this season on the road.
