Kayleen Hicks Wins 50 and 100 Breaststroke at Malibu Invitational

MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's swimming and diving squad gathered at the Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool for the second day of the annual Malibu Invitational to compete in both the mid-distance and sprint events. Kayleen Hicks highlighted the day for the Waves, winning two of the three breaststroke races this afternoon.

Hicks (Chico, Calif./Chico HS) opened the day with a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke before winning the 50 and 100 yard events. The senior clocked a 2:23.21 in the 200 - just two seconds off her Pepperdine Record time --, a: 30.88 in the 50 and finished the day with a time of 1:06.64 in the 100.

She continued on in the 50 freestyle with a top-15 time of 25.47 and was named the Waves' top point scorer in the sprints.

Madison Krall (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Centennial HS) finished in eighth in both the 200 butterfly, as well as the 200 IM with times of 2:12.89 and 2:15.51, respectively. The sophomore had a busy day, also swimming in the 200 breaststroke (2:34.47), 200 freestyle (2:00.56) and a leg in the 300 freestyle relay (2:36.66). Krall was named the high point scorer in the middle distance events, in addition to the distance events during yesterday's session.

Sarah Burris (Virginia Beach, Ca./Cox HS) was the first Wave to finish in the 50 freestyle, 50 back stroke, 100 backstroke, and the 100 freestyle. Burris' top overall finish of the day was an 18th place finish in the 100 backstroke, behind a time of 1:03.09.

Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) picked up a top-10 finish in the 200 backstroke after stopping the timer at the 2:14.32 mark. She also raced the 100 distance of the same stroke with a 16th-place time of 1:04.35. Stephanie Ertl (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) rounded out Pepperdine's 100 backstroke representatives, with a time of 1:07.49.

In the final event of the day, Hicks, Krall, Adkins, Sarah Dannemiller (Beech Grove, Ind./Franklin Community HS) Ertl and Burris teamed up to collectively post a time of 2:36.66 in the 300 freestyle relay. That time earned the group sixth-place honors.

The Waves return to the pool on Nov. 5-6 for the Cal Poly Shootout in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Following the Shootout, Pepperdine hosts the Malibu Diving Invitational on Nov. 17.
