Carroll Knocks Down 5K Record at UCLA

MALIBU, Calif. - In her last collegiate race, Pepperdine senior Brieanna Carroll (Pusan, South Korean/Pusan American HS) recorded a school record time of 17:59.34 in the 5,000-meter run Friday night at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational hosted by UCLA.

Carroll finished 11th in a field of 22 runners, which included competitors from Texas A&M, Washington State and Cal State Northridge. Carroll also held the school's previous 5K record of 18:05.29, which was posted at the 2007 Northridge Relays.

"I am so proud of Brie," head coach Robert Radnoti said. "Our team captain has weathered shin splints most of the season and year, yet put in the quality work to run an exceptional race."

Freshman Elizabeth Coe (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley HS) posted a season best time of 4:43.94 in the 1,500-meter run, which Radnoti said, would have set a school record had Lauren Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS) not lowered it so much this year.

Lodge has recorded the team's top-four fastest times in the 1,500 this season including the varsity record mark of 4:39.68, which she registered a few week ago at UCLA's Cal/Nevada Invitaional.

Radnoti added that he and the coaching staff is very excited about the future of Waves' running with freshman Coe and Lodge part of the roster for the next three seasons.

On the men's side, the highlight was freshman Jordan Wozniak's (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) personal best 800-meter time of 1:58.86. Radnoti said Wozniak is still a novice to this event so it was good to see him break under the two-minute barrier.

Pepperdine has just two regular season meets left on its 2009 schedule: next week's Mt. SAC Relays and Irvine's Steve Scott Invitational, which will take place the first weekend of May.
