SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Junior Tiffany Martz and freshman Jenna Tenwolde won the 1- and 3-meter competitions, and sophomore Madison Krall was the runner-up in three events, as Pepperdine won two of three duals Friday during the first day of competition at the Cal Poly Shootout.
Pepperdine defeated Cal State Northridge, 76-62, and thumped Cal Lutheran, 117-19, but lost to the host Broncos, 94-46.
The Waves scored a bulk of their points off the diving boards, capturing four of the top five places in each event. Martz (Folsom, Calif./Folsom HS) won the 1-meter title with 241.10 points, while Tenwolde scored her first collegiate victory (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) with a 3-meter score of 237.30 points.
Sophomores Kristin Scribner (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) and Leslie Wade (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) also finished among the top five off both springboards.
The Waves couldn't pull out any victories in the pool, but Krall (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Centennial) came close on three occasions while competing in the 1650 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 500 free. Krall posted a 17:53.20 in her first mile swim of the season, clocked a 2:11.98 in the 200 fly and finished the 500-yard course in 5:13.22.
Junior Jessell Owens (Winnemucca, Nev./Lowry HS) and sophomore Martha Murphy (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain HS) both posted season best times in the 200 fly of 2:27.69 and 2:27.87, respectively, and senior Brianna Blanchard (Agoura Hills, Calif./La Reina HS) recorded a season best 5:21.06 in the 500 free.
Elsewhere in the pool, freshmen Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) and Rachel Dekar (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School) scored a handful of medal-stand performances.
Dekar was second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:27.03 and Adkins took third in the 500 free at 5:18.04. The two rookies also led off the third-place 200 medley relay (1:52.72) and Dekar completed her night swimming the third leg for the bronze-medal winning 200 free relay (1:43.33).
Junior Kayleen Hicks (Chico, Calif./Chico HS) had a solid night as well, finishing third in both the 50 free (25.43) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.97).
"Many of our best swimmers were sick today but they hung in there and we are pleased with the two wins," head coach Nick Rodionoff said. "We would love to meet Cal Poly healthy."
The second and final day of the Cal Poly Shootout begins Saturday at 10 a.m.
