Krall & Dekar Advance to Finals of Toshiba Classic

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Sophomore Madison Krall and freshman Rachel Dekar advanced to the finals of their respective events Friday night during the second day of competition of the Toshiba Classic, which is being hosted by UC San Diego at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.

Their efforts were part of an overall performance in which the Waves recorded three personal records in addition to 14 season bests.

Krall (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Centennial HS) qualified for finals of the 400 individual medley after recording a season best time of 4:39.65 in prelims. She was just a tad slower in finals, where she placed 32nd out of 82 competitors, with a mark of 4:40.34.

Dekar (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School) twice lowered her time in the 100 breaststroke. She began the day with a season best of 1:05.83, and then produced a 1:05.19 in prelims before recording a 14th-place time of 1:05.11 in finals.

Both of Pepperdine's relays scored for the second consecutive day as well. The Waves' 200 medley relay team of senior Ali Chester (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly HS), Dekar, junior Francesca Cyphers (Lake Oswego, Ore./St. Mary's Academy) and senior Dani Kimmel (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake HS) finished 15th in 1:48.58. Cyphers 50-yard butterfly split of 25.99 is a personal best.

The 800 free relay, which consisted of Krall, senior Brianna Blanchard (Agoura Hills, Calif./La Reina HS) and freshmen Sarah Burris (Virginia Beach, Calif./Cox HS) and Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) placed 19th with a time of 8:06.07.

Burris recorded a personal record 200-yard split of 2:00.43 while swimming the third leg, which was more than a second faster than her 200 free prelim time (and previous individual best) of 2:01.61.

In other individual events, Cyphers clocked a season best 59.57 in the 100 fly, Adkins produced the Waves' best 200 free time of 1:57.99, and Chester recorded a season best 1:00.52 in leading all Pepperdine swimmers in the 100 backstroke.

The Waves conclude their stay at the Toshiba Classic Saturday. Their next competition is the Finis Collegiate Invitational, which again will take place at the Belmont Olympic Pool from Dec. 11-13.
