MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team has to feel good about where they are at this point in the season after winning 11 of 13 swimming events from Soka, Concordia and Azusa Pacific Saturday morning at the PCSC Time Trials.
Senior Haley Wilson, freshman Rachel Cote' (Honolulu, Hawai’i/Punahou HS) and juniors Marissa McDaniel (Oak Harbor, Wash./Oak Harbor HS) and Dani Kimmel (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake HS) paced the Waves with two wins apiece.
Sophomore Francesca Cyphers (Lake Oswego, Ore./St. Mary's Academy), junior Brianna Blanchard (Agoura, Calif./La Reina HS) and freshman Madison Krall (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Centennial HS) all won one event.
“I think we achieved a lot of our goals today,” head coach Nick Rodionoff said. “We posted some good times and the kids who had to qualify for PCSCs ended up doing so, although I think we’re in a tough situation with Madison (Krall) since we would like to have her swim both the mile and the 200 butterfly, however, those events are on the same day.”
Wilson won the 200 individual medley with a season best time of 2:10.30, leading a Pepperdine sweep of the top-four places. She later won the 100 freestyle in 53.47, which was .03 seconds shy of matching her season best from last October’s Malibu Invitational.
“She swam the 100 free very relaxed today, which tells me she’s going to go a lot faster at the conference meet,” said Rodionoff of Wilson’s performance.
Cote' won the 100 backstroke for the third time this year with her mark of 59.2 and won her first 50 freestyle title in 25.03.
McDaniel reached the wall first in the 400 IM at 4:58.76, and her winning 200 backstroke time of 2:19.19 was just a few seconds slower than her seed time.
Kimmel was the Waves’ top competitor in each of the breaststroke events, taking first in the 100 at 1:06.79 and the 200 in 2:25.93.
Cyphers won the 100 fly in 58.91, which was very close to tying her season best of 58.48. Blanchard won the 200 free in 2:01.15 and Krall claimed the 200 fly crown in 2:10.46.
Senior transfer Alyson Loyd (Orange, Calif./Chapman University) and freshman Jillian McGrath (Ventura, Calif./Buena HS) led off the meet by both posting season bests in the 500 freestyle. Loyd completed the course in 5:23.36 and McGrath touched in 5:23.38.
Results from the 1- and 3-meter springboard competitions will be made available later today.
