Begemann, Beidas Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals

TULSA, Oklahoma Â In a rain delayed third day of singles competition at the NCAA Division I Championships, Peperdine’s Bassam Beidas and Andre Begemann upset two nationally ranked players to advance to the quarterfinals, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Begemann (Blomberg, Germany) began his match an hour later than expected due to rain. He defeated No. 3 seed Oleksandr Nedovyesov (Oklahoma State), 6-3, 6-4.

“Going into the match I knew had to be aggressive and focused,” said Begemann. “I knew I couldn’t give him any points because he doesn’t give an inch. I also knew I could have been my last match and I was fired up and focused. Oleksandr was one of the toughest competitors in the tournament.”

Nedovyesov complimented Begemann after the match.

"First of all, I want to say congratulations to Andre.  He is a really good player. He played really, really, well today. His serve was amazing." 

Beidas (Cairo, Egypt) met No. 4 Travis Helgeson ( University of Georgia) for the second time in the tournament. Beidas upset Helgeson in the team competition, 6-2, 6-4.

“I was a bit worried because it’s always harder the second time,” Beidas said. “I knew had to be more energetic than him. He’s a good player and I knew it wouldn’t always go my way and I needed to stay tough throughout the match.”

Saturday (May 24), Begemann meets Justin Kronauge (Ohio State) at 12 p.m. and Beidas faces No. 8 seed Alex Clayton (Stanford) at 1:30 p.m. The winners will advance to the semifinals on Sunday (May 25).
