Begemann, Beidas Advance to NCAA's Round of 16

TULSA, Oklahoma Â Andre Begemann and Bassam Beidas of the Pepperdine men’s tennis team advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Division I Singles Championships, on Thursday, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Begemann (Blomberg, Texas) qualified for the next round after solidly defeating Cosmin Cotet (Texas Christian University), 6-2, 6-1. The Pepperdine Athlete of the Year dominated both sets from the start.

“I felt a lot better today,” said Begemann. “I was moving better and I was much more focused. I tried to win every point.”

Beidas (Cairo,Egypt) had a tougher battle against Nestor Briceno (University of Florida). Winning the first set, yet showing some nerves, Beidas lost the second set in a tie-breaker before finally taking control of the match and defeating Briceno in the third set (6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-5).

“I wasn’t focused at first and I needed to change my game plan,” said Beidas. “Coach Carless came and talked to me and helped me get back to where I needed to be.”

The No. 24 ITA ranked doubles team of Omar Altmann (Cairo, Egypt) and Begemann were defeated in the round of 32 by Austin Krajicek and Conor Pollack (Texas A&M) after a three set battle. The Wave duo lost the first set 4-6, then came back to win the second set 6-3, before falling in the third set, 3-6.

Friday (May 23), Begemann meets No. 3 seed Oleksandr Nedovyesov (Oklahoma State) at 1 p.m. and Beidas plays No. 4 Helgeson (University of Georgia) at 1:30 p.m. Beidas defeated Helgeson in the round of 16 NCAA Team Championships, 6-2, 6-4. The winners of each match will advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday (May 24).
