Track Teams Fare Well in Pomona

POMONA, Calif. Â The Pepperdine women’s track team set six school records and the first-year men’s team established two new records at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday.

The highlight of the day was senior Chris Ogle (Tucson, Ariz./Mountain View HS/Arizona) winning the men’s 5000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:24.83, more than eight seconds ahead of the next competitor.

Freshman Amanda Ajdari (Valencia, Calif./Hart HS) was part of three school records, as she set the mark in the 200 meters (25.74 for 16th place) and she anchored the 4x100 (49.75 for third place) and 4x400 (4:03.97 for second place).

Freshman Chelsea Wishard (Lawai, Hawaii/Kauai HS) broke her own record in the 1500 meters, as she placed ninth in 4:45.64, about three seconds better than her previous time.

Freshman Aneka Myles (Victorville, Calif./Silverado HS) established new marks in the women’s shot put (10.29m for 19th place) and discus (31.71m for 19th place).

Other strong finishes were by Ajdari (11th in the 100 meters) and junior Courtney Young (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS), who was 10th in the 5000 meters.

On the men’s side, freshman Eric Magana (Whittier, Calif./La Serna HS) ran 1:55.84 in the 800 meters to place 11th and edge fellow freshman David Williams (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS), who ran 1:56.07 for 12th place, and establish a new school record. Freshman Conrad Wozniak (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) broke his own record in the 5000 meters as he placed 10th in 15:18.67.

“We had a very good day at Pomona,” Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. “Nearly everyone on the team set personal records or had new season bests.”

Pepperdine’s runners were inspired by the return of volunteer coach Dick Kampmann, who attended a meet for the first time this spring after dealing with health issues.

The Waves will next compete at the UCLA Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational on Friday (April 11).
