No. 13 Waves Edge No. 42 Cal, 4-3

MALIBU, Calif. Â No. 13 Pepperdine men’s tennis team continued its winning streak with a seventh straight dual match win against  California, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.

“We didn’t play that well in doubles, although our No. 2 doubles team of Bassam Beidas and Rickus de Villiers is playing great and really adding to our strength," said head coach Adam Steinberg. "The top of our singles line-up is really playing well." 

The Waves (10-6) won the doubles point over the Bears after some difficult matches. No. 23 ranked doubles team of Andre Begemann (Blomberg, Germany) and Omar Altmann (Cairo, Egypt) got off to a slow start in the No. 1 match against Geoff Chizever and Pedro Zerbini (Cal), yet came from behind to win a tough seventh set after alternating match point with Cal several times before winning. The team went on to win the match, 9-7. Mahmoud Kamel (Paris, France) and James Lemke (Melbourne, Australia) had already clinched the doubles point on the third court by defeating Jonathan Dahan and Bozhidar Katsaroz  (Cal), 8-6.

“We didn’t come out like we should have. We were flat footed and one or two balls can change the whole outcome of the match in doubles,” said Altmann. “We picked it up and finally broke their spirit. It was a difficult match against a tough team. Rankings don’t always reflect the strength of a team.”

The top three singles players for Pepperdine handily defeated their Cal opponents with No. 123 Altmann finishing first with a win over Pierre Moullion, 6-1, 6-3, in No. 3 singles. No. 10 Begemann was second to finish with a victory in No. 1 singles, defeating No. 118 Kallim Stewart, 6-1, 6-3 and No. 20  Beidas (Cairo, Egypt) clinched the match for the Waves by defeating Eoin Heavey, 6-2, 6-2, in No. 2 singles.

No. 4 singles Lemke, retired from his match against Jonathan Dahan, 3-6, 2-3, with a strained hip flexor.

Next up, the Waves play No. 47 Harvard, Saturday, March 29 at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center, at 1 p.m.
