The Bears (10-6) won the doubles point with Andre Begemann (
“I was disappointed with our doubles play and I let the team know it,” said head coach Adam Steinberg. “They came back with an incredible, inspired performance in singles. I think we’re back in the thick of things nationally.”
No. 19 Begemann tied the score 1-1, after defeating No. 10 Denes Lukas, 6-2, 6-2, in the first singles match to finish.
“Today was great for the team,” said Begemann. “I felt like I played well and was happy I could help the team.”
No. 25 Bassam Beidas (Cairo, Egypt) gave an inspired performance in his win over David Galic, 6-3, 6-4, in No. 2 singles to put the Waves up by one point. James Lemke (Melbourne Australia), fought back in the second set of No. 4 singles to claim a victory over Dominik Mueller in a tie-breaker, 6-2, 7-6 (5).
With three matches still on the courts, Pepperdine needed only one win to clinch the team victory. Players from both teams lined up on opposite sides of the courts cheering in unison as their teammates fought for victories. All three Wave’s were up at one point, yet it was Altmann who ultimately prevailed with a 6-7 (3), 6-0, 6-4, win over the Bear’s Matt Brown.
Saturday, March 15, the Waves host Texas A & M, at 1 p.m., at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
