Waves Defeat SLO at Home, 5-2

MALIBU, Calif. Â The No. 21 Pepperdine men’s tennis team picked up its first season win Thursday afternoon, against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (4-2), at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif.

The win marked the 58th consecutive home win for the Waves (1-3). Pepperdine won the doubles point will all three teams recording victories over the Mustangs (3-2).

“It was good to play at home,” said sophomore James Lemke (Melbourne, Australia). “Everyone played a bit better today as well.”

In singles, the Waves captured the first four matches with No. 13 Bassam Beidas (Cairo, Egypt) defeating Joel Akerber, 6-3, 6-2, in No.1 singles. No. 2 singles was won by No.66 Omar Altmann (Cairo, Egypt), who defeated Andrew Gerst, 6-4, 6-4 and No. 73 Lemke took the No. 3 singles with a win over Darryn Young, 6-1, 6-0. Mahmoud Kamel (Paris, France) brought home the No. 4 singles victory by defeating Blake Wardman, 6-3, 6-3.

“It’s great to get our first win today,” said head coach Adam Steinberg. “The guys had a great team attitude and now we need to get ready for a big match on Saturday (University of Alabama).

The Mustang won the No. 5 and No. 6 singles with Robert Foy defeating Brian Brogan (Los Altos, Calif./ Los Altos HS) 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 and Drew Jacobs defeated Johannes de Villiers

(Durban, South Africa).

Next up for the Waves is a home match on Saturday, Feb. 9, against University of Alabama, at 1 p.m., at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center, in Malibu, Calif.
