#22 Waves Upset #14 Florida, 4-3

GAINSVILLE, Fla. Â No.16 ITA ranked Andre Begemann (Blomberg, Germany) upset Florida’s No. 6 ITA ranked Greg Oullette, 6-2, 6-1, while James Lemke (Melbourne, Australia) won the match clincher, to defeat Florida 4-3, on Monday afternoon at the Ring Tennis Complex, in Gainsville, Fla.

"We felt like we won the NCAA's," said head coach Adam Steinberg. "Crazy things have been happening and we deserved this win... They played hard and never gave up. This is how we have to play through the end of the season." 

 

Bassam Beidas (Cairo, Egypt) won the No. 3 singles by defeating Alex Lacroix 2-6, 6-2, 7-5. The Waves (2-5) were leading the match 3-1, until the Gators (4-1) won the No. 6 singles to make the score 3-2. With two matches remaining, Pepperdine needed only one win to clinch the match. The No. 2 and No. 4 matches went to three sets with Nestor Briceno defeating Omar Altmann (Cairo, Egypt) 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4. It came down to the No. 4 match with Lemke playing a very competitive match against Jeff Dadamo that came down to the third set 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

In doubles action, Pepperdine won the doubles point after Lemke and partner Beidas defeated Barton/Hannui 8-5. Prior to the win, the Waves and Gators had split the doubles with Begemann and Altmann victorious in the No. 1 position with a win over Oullette/Dadamo, 8-3 and Florida winning the No. 3 doubles with Lacroix/Briceno defeating Brian Broghan (Los Gatos, Calif. / Los Gatos HS) and Johannes de Villiers (South Africa), 8-1.
