Three Waves Conclude Nike Cup with Personal Bests

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Freshmen Rachel Cote and Madison Krall and senior Michelle Fadley all posted lifetime bests in their respective events Saturday during the third and final day of competition at the Nike Cup hosted by UC Irvine at Long Beach’s Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.

 

Cote (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) twice lowered her personal record in the 200 backstroke. She entered the meet with a seed time of 2:07.57, but brought that down to a 2:06.45 in prelims and again to a 2:05.22 in finals, which was good for 13th place. Her mark is the third fastest in Pepperdine history.

 

Krall (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Centennial HS) and Fadley (Malibu, Calif./Northwood HS) both established a PR in the 200 butterfly. Krall touched the wall in prelims with a 2:09.45 and Fadley coasted to a 2:10.09 in finals.

 

Elsewhere, junior Dani Kimmel (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake HS) and sophomore Kayleen Hicks (Chico, Calif./Chico HS) each scored in the 200 breaststroke with their 10th and 13th-place times of 2:23.14 and 2:24.40, and the 400 freestyle relay team of senior Haley Wilson (Carpinteria, Calif./Santa Barbara HS), Kimmel, Krall and Cote placed 11th with a mark of 3:36.29.

 

Pepperdine finished 10th out of 21 teams at the Nike Cup with 308 points. Brigham Young University was tops with 1076 points and was followed by San Jose State and UNLV.

 

The Waves are off from competition until after the New Year when they’ll spend two days at the UC Irvine Invitational on Jan. 3 and 4.

 

Pepperdine’s homecoming to the Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool is slated for Jan. 17 vs. Cal State Northridge. The Waves’ also will play host to the PCSC Time Trials on Jan. 31.
