LONG BEACH, Calif. – Pepperdine swimmers continued to assault the school records books during the second day of competition at the Nike Cup hosted by UC Irvine at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach.
The night’s top performance belonged to junior Dani Kimmel (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake HS) who reclaimed the school’s record from sophomore Kayleen Hicks (Chico, Calif./Chico HS) in the 100-yard breaststroke with her finals time of 1:05.16.
Kimmel entered the 2008-09 season with a school record of 1:05.24 only to see Hicks top her mark with a 1:05.17 in leading off the 300 breaststroke relay at the PSCS meet on Oct. 10.
Earlier in the night, Kimmel and her 200 medley relay obtained the school’s second-fastest mark in this event with a 1:47.03. Freshman Rachel Cote (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) led off with a 50 backstroke split of 26.72 and was followed by Kimmel, sophomore Francesca Cyphers (Lake Oswego, Ore./St. Mary's Academy) and senior Haley Wilson (Carpinteria, Calif. (Santa Barbara HS).
Kimmel’s, Cyphers’ and Wilson’s splits were respectively clocked at 29.63, 26.01 and 24.67.
The medley relay is proving to be one of Pepperdine’s greatest strengths. This same foursome on Thursday recorded the fifth-fastest 400 medley relay time in school history at 3:54.69, and posted the third fastest mark at 3:53.84 two weeks ago at the UCI Shootout.
Elsewhere on the list of second day highlights, freshman Madison Krall (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Centennial HS) cracked the school’s all-time top-five performance list in the 400 individual medley with a 4:35.21, and Cote did the same in the 100 back with a 56.84.
Through just four competitions this season, Krall already has etched her name into the record books under three separate events (400 IM, 500 and 1650 free), while Cote is listed under four (100 and 200 back, 200 and 400 medley relay).
Senior Michelle Fadley (Malibu, Calif. (Northwood HS) also registered a personal best in the 200 free with her 800 free relay leadoff split of 1:58.27.
As a team, Pepperdine’s combined performances from Friday night allowed them to climb two spots to ninth place with 231 points. This year’s field, which features 20 schools, is led by BYU with 700.5 points.
