A strong first half for the Waves propelled by double-digit scoring by Ross and Menton and a strong defensive effort gave Pepperdine a 25 point lead at the half. The Waves scored 66 points on turnovers and shot 56.3% to CSULA’s 43.5% on field goals. Pepperdine went 75% for free throws and 50% on shots beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles were 50% on three point shots.
“I really focused on my play for my teammates,” said Isabell. “It’s not about me ... it’s about the team and when we go hard, we reap the benefits.”
The score remained within three points in the first half until the Waves went on a 7-0 scoring run with 14:35 left in the half to give Pepperdine a 20-9 lead. The Golden Eagles Sequoia Crandell scored on a fast-break layup to end the Waves run temporarily and close the gap by two, 20-11. The Waves responded with an 8-0 scoring run aided by two shots beyond the arc by Menton to give Pepperdine a 17-point lead.
Cal State L.A. broke up the Waves offense with a 7-0 run of its own to close the gap to 33-26, with 5:00 left on the clock. Walter scored five of the seven points.
The Waves closed out the first-half with a 20-3 offensive attack to open the lead by 25 points, 55-30.
Pepperdine offense turned it on the first six minutes of the second-half to score 14 points and a strong defense only allowed CSULA to score two points. With 18:21 on the clock, Isabell threw a no-look over the shoulder pass to a trailing Ayim who scored on a layup. Ayim contributed eight points on the early scoring run to help the Waves to a 69-30 lead, with 16:11 left in the game
Joy Mason and Jameiz Terrell worked on closing the gap with two layups for the Golden Eagles, 69-34.
Freshman Skye Barnett (Albuquerque, N.M./ Cibola HS) answered back with a two point shot in the paint and a free throw followed by a layup by Brittany Taylor for the Golden Eagles to make the score 71-36.
The Waves continued the full-court press with Lelo scoring on a fast-break layup and drawing a hard foul followed by another layup at 10:29 to increase the lead to 78-36. Walter followed with a layup for CSULA making her 13th point of the game.
Pepperdine offense took over once again with a 21-3 run highlighted by Lelo’s eight points ending with a Wave lead of 91-39. Mason scored a layup followed by a Wave shot in the paint by Alisha Bryant (
Five Wave free throws and a jump shots by Alex Jarrell (Shelbyville, Tenn./ Shelbyville HS) and Barnett added to a layup by Lauren Bell (San Bruno,Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) brought the Waves to triple digits with a score of 104-48.
