Cote, Krall Lead Waves at Malibu Invite

Waves Sprint/Diving Meet Recap

Freshman Rachel Cote (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Punahou HS) led Pepperdine at the Malibu Invitational Sprint Meet, scoring 37 points. Cote finished first in the 50 butterfly (26.57), 50 backstroke (27.45) and 100 back (57.09), in addition to swimming anchor for the winning 300 Free Relay (2:27.31).

Cote's relay team also included Kelly Donovan, who led off with a 50-yard split of 25.31, plus Ali Chester (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly HS), Kayleen Hicks (Chico, Calif./Chico HS), Danielle Kimmel (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake HS) and Haley Wilson (Carpinteria, Calif./Santa Barbara HS).

Kimmel and Wilson were Pepperdine's second and third highest scorers, respectively, during the morning sprint session. Kimmel totaled 28 points, nine of which were earned for winning the 50 breast (29.87), and Wilson scored 22 points. Wilson's top individual performances included a runner-up finish in the 200 IM (2:10.92) and a third-place showing in the 100 free (53.44).

Hicks won the 100 breast title with a mark of 1:05.80.

Pepperdine diving claimed the top five spots in a combined 1- and 3-meter competition where each diver recorded three attempts off both springboards. Freshman Kristin Scribner (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) posted the highest score with 209.05 points and was followed by teammates Leslie Wade (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) (197.70), Tiffany Martz (Folsom, Calif./Folsom HS) (190.60), Amanda Pond (Wayland, Mass./Wayland HS) (181.60) and Shannon Hedman (Fair Oaks, Calif./Loretto HS) (178.00).

Waves Distance Meet Recap

Madison Krall (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Centennial HS) was Pepperdine's leading scorer with 23 points on the strength of two bronze-medal showings in the 200 fly (2:10.33) and 500 free (5:11.34). Krall also helped the Waves' 400 medley 'B' relay post a runner-up time of 4:08.36. Krall was joined on this relay by Chester, Kimmel and Brianna Blanchard (Agoura, Calif./La Reina HS). Chester recorded a 100 back leadoff split of 1:01.97.

The 400 medley relay was won by Pepperdine's 'A' team of Cote, Hicks, Francesca Cyphers (Lake Oswego, Ore./St. Mary's Academy) and Wilson in 3:56.40. Cote's leadoff split was clocked at 57.61.

Other top performances from the afternoon session included Hicks' and Kimmel's one-two finish in the 200 breast. Hicks touched first at 2:24.31 and Kimmel was right behind at 2:24.40.

Wilson was third in the 200 free at 1:56.67.

Pepperdine/Malibu Invitational Highlights

Rachel Cote's 57.09 in the 100 back and Kayleen Hicks' 2:24.31 in the 200 breast both rank as the fifth-fastest performance in Pepperdine history.
